What are those of you who celebrate Lent doing this year? Giving up, adding on, fasting, doing for others...just wondering?

Today is Ash Wednesday. My plan for meals is to eat no meat today, and at work to try to go out of my way to do something special for the patients under my care. I don't know yet what it will be, but usually an opportunity opens up each night that I work. Sometimes it is simply to spend a few extra minutes visiting with a lonely patient, sometimes it means buying a snack for them out of my own pocket when they are hungry and there is nothing in the refrigerator for them.
Sometimes it is dialing the phone for them when they want to speak with family. Or interceding with the doctor to obtain orders for something the patient needs. These are things I normally do, but I make special effort to do more of them during Lent. I also try to offer up prayers for my patients and for family and friends. And I definitely will be offering up prayers that we do not have to go to war with Iraq.

countrygirl, I wish you were in Baltimore and could be the nurse for my family and me when we need you.

I decided to start something I have thought about doing for a long time. This is not an original idea. I learned this from a man at my church while he was teaching something or other to an adult class. Every day he writes someone a nice note. He has written to his wife, daughters, neighbors, co-workers, clients, and even strangers. He simply says soemthing nice and that is about it.

My husband has been a recipient of one of his notes. He is his eye doctor and had seen him for an emergency visit. Nothing special on my husbands part, but this man wrote a very nice note and sent it. It was a blessing to my husband.

Something simple and well received.

Even though my particular religion doesn't celebrate Lent, I decided I would do something that is good for myself physically, emotionally and spiritually.

I am horrible at taking daily vitamins/supplements. So I have promised my Lord that I would take care of the body He has given me by taking them daily.

I will also do what you suggested Dotsie and write some encouraging notes to people in my life. (And I don't mean email).

Spiritually, I am committing to pray for our country and our military personnel who are deployed for possible war. I will also spend a little time each day reading the Bible.

So that is my lenten committment. I hope you all keep me accountable.

God Bless.

I caught up on my note sending today. I had to do four at once (one for Fri., Sat., Sun., and today!) but they are written! You are holding me accountable and I thank you!
