What a great discussion, everyone. Good points made by all! Love it when we can 'really dig into a subject" like this...

Amen, Jabber. (Actually, I heard the JP Morgan lost another billion on top of that, but I haven't researched it.) I teach at a small college where I've pointed out to students not to have an inferiority complex about not being in the ivy league, since those are the guys who tanked the economy. And they did it not because they're "stupid" but because their values are screwed up -- they don't have a sense of community or even empathy. To get into ivy league colleges, you have to be an A student to begin with, and maybe know how to behave yourself according to the mores of an elite class. Oftentimes your instructors are grad students and your professors are off doing research. Colleges like mine admit students with lower grades and lower SATs but we work closely with them. Our mission is to teach. And everyone on campus is dedicated to educating the person. It's like a village. Sorry, I got off topic.

DJ,
I have had experience along the lines you're referencing.
At my 20th High School Reunion, I noticed those "at the top of the class" in school were now in bad relationships, on drugs, and generally unhappy. While those considered "at the bottom of the class" in school were now business owners and living very successfully. And you're topic is fine. Blessings...

No, it's not off topic. Unfortunately, getting rich at any cost to others seems to have become one of our core values. After the appalling debacle of Enron a few years ago and now JP Morgan just losing a billion or two, you'd think we might sit back and take a look at where our obsession with money and quick earnings is taking us. Sadly, I fear the result will be the opposite: even more people trying to manipulate the system.

I know there are plenty of people out there who are honest, not greedy, and who work hard, but they don't get the headlines -- and increasingly, they don't seem to be valued. When we start going after our teachers and firefighters as leeches on the system, we cannot be surprised if things get ugly and our young people have no idea what path they should pursue. What do we spend our time on? Sports and stars.
