You can have whatever you want for breakfast, no one says it has to be breakfast food as long as you eat something to start your day off right.
My mother likes chipped beef on toast or she'll eat a piece of broiled fish topped with cheese and a side of veges. Mom is 89 going to be 90 in April and has never been overweight one pound. Chatty, maybe your mother ate the bigger meal of day at breakfast? Dotsie, I'm pretty boring and I know it. Not alot of vast variation at home for breakfast. Usually it's half cup of microwaved oatmeal with 1/2 cup of skim milk. Plus tea with milk. Often with a fresh fruit on side and that will depend what's in season. That's why I love local fruit in season time. Sometimes will have a small slice of fat-free artisanal bread that we buy from our favourite bakery. (could be rosemary-olive bread, cranberry-pistachio bread, fig-anise bread...) It's quick and easy because often I'm jumping onto a bike afterwards. But when we go on vacation, I do have bigger breakfasts, often because it's part of the hotel deal. But when that happens, I tend to make that big breakfast...more like a brunch. If there's a long bike ride for the day meaning well over 70 kms., then I do try to eat a bigger breakfast..with at least 1 hr. to digest if possible,..before cycling. I haven't prepared eggs for breakfast in the last....15 yrs. But I will have an egg if we vacation somewhere for breakfast and if convenient/makes sense for stomach at that time. I tend to prepare eggs for supper, ie. egg stir fry dishes, scrambled or omelet with veggies, savory egg custard, etc....for supper. It would be protein, in lieu of any meat for me. I personally find eggs almost too heavy for breakfast...unless I cut back on supper or go on a long bike ride. Jack makes his own breakfast, he tends to like his fat-free yogurt with his own homemade applesauce (that he makes huge batches in advance), maybe a bagel or slice of bread and orange juice. I could not eat bagels often for breakfast.

I usually pop a frozen waffle into the toaster first thing, just to get something in my stomach with the morning meds. Then, a couple of hours later, I have yogurt with fruit. My body chemistry has changed. I used to be able to have cookies and coffee for breakfast. I don't drink coffee anymore. About 4 months ago, after having coffee since I was 15, I just stopped. Just stopped! Didn't even think about it. No cravings, no missing it, no nothing. Hmm, I wish I could just stop with some of my other bad habits, or just "start" exercise in the AM. About the body chemistry: my husband has been laid off since November. The blessing in this is that he is such a good cook. We call our kitchen "Woody's restaurant and bakery." I've been eating sweets for 4 months. Yesterday morning, I decided to have a applesauce walnut spice cupcake with cream cheese frosting. I was thinking of the good ingredients: eggs, applesauce, walnuts. No more than 15 minutes after eating it, I had a total body crash. I was deek and wizzy, I mean weak and dizzy, nauseated, and I had to lay down. This happened to me a couple of times during the holidays. Now I know it's for real, a hypo-glycemic rise and fall. So, back to the waffles and yogurt!

Oh, Dotsie, I agree that is so boring! Live a little! Try the chocolate! I don't know how I got out of the habit of adding sweeteners. Does your husband have to eat any certain thing(s) for breakfast re: diabetic? Does anyone use soy milk with their cereals?

During the week for breakfast we have old fashion oatmeal with blueberries, juice, yogurt, and coffee. On weekends, sometimes I make blueberry muffins, cinnamon breakfast cake, or eggs.

I think we bought 6 real eggs ..once in the past 5 yrs.
Instead we buy egg substitutes or egg whites. I tend to buy the latter. It tastes lighter to me which is what we want. As I said earlier in thread, we tend to prepare egg dishes..for supper at home. Hmmmm....only about 2-3 times per month. It's just a natural evolution of things. I don't feel a powerful need to eat eggs more often nor do I miss it when I don't have it.
Fried rice that I do, chatty is how my mother does it which is different from the restaurant. I think the restaurants use abit too much soy sauce. But the general process is I think is to stir fry cooked rice by itself and then combine it with stir fried eggs & with veggies already nearly done. Then stir fry again quickly everything, etc.
However, my mother omitted the stir frying of rice separately and just put in the rice with the stir fried eggs and veggies, which gives the whole dish a much fluffier and different taste than restaurant style.
I actually gave up trying to do stir fried rice with eggs, etc. Instead I simply have eggs stir fried/scrambled with veggies, onion and garlic on the side with rice. That alone is a meal in itself..for supper. ---------------------------------------------------- Oatmeal is considered a good fast absorbing carbohydrate that alot of people who exercise early in the day, eat. However I never eat the huge bowls of oatmeal that one might see others have. it's just half a c. of oatmeal with some milk. I have oatmeal that has no sugar.
I'm not pure because my downfall is after a bike ride, I might have a scone, or muffin and coffee.

I never use to eat breakfast say maybe 15 years aqo, and I mean never. I was up, dressed and out the door. Now for the past several years I wake up, shower etc., and am starving for breakfast, actual hunger pangs and all. I don't even remember when things changed either, very strange!
Later today I am making my famous, and it is too, Ham Salad. I made it a coupole of times and my ex when we were married, took it to work and gave bites to people asking. It was so popular they began giving him orders for the stuff. I was making ham salad every week and selling it plus my son always has to have a large container too.
Many people relocating from the Midweswt, and New York said it's impossible to get good ham salad here like back home, and they are correct. I make it the old fashioned way and it is to die for. My son asked me to make some when he was here yesterday but I didn't have any ham. It's normally what I am asked to bring for parties, that or giant stuffred mushrooms.

Blondie, none of my recipes are a secret, well almost none. I am happy to see them copied, used and know that my friends, and their familys enjoyed them...
I always make a lot because it keeps in the frig for a long time to make sandwiches or adorn a salad.
HAM SALAD
Ingredients
Food PROCESSOR 1 (10) pound ham, already cooked. 1 large green pepper, cleaned and chopped into small pieces 1 large onion, chopped into small pieces 1 cup mustard 1 1/2 cups Miracle Whip pepper to taste Directions:
In a Food Processor put half your ham cut into bite size pieces. Grind ham until all pieces are ground well.
Add half the onions, half the green peppers, half the mustard and half the Miracle Whip, and pepper. Then grind again until all mixed well together into a paste like mixture... Scrap the ham salad out of grinder into a large bowl.
Begin again with the other half of ham pieces, onion, green pepper, and black pepper. When the second part of all are completely ground add all together into the bowl. Taste it! If you think you need more Miracle Whip add to your taste.
Place in frig for an hour or so, it is much tastier cold the next day. This is a joy to eat in a sandwich on any bread or toss some into a salad like you would tuna.

Thanks for sharing this recipe with us Chatty!
2 questions...
1. do you prefer a specific brand of ham or doesn't that matter? 2. what kind of mustard ?
I think my husband is going to go crazy for this! He loves, Chicken salad, egg salad , shrimp salad...but I have never made Ham salad...Thanks so much.

I eat breakfast every morning. One of my favoutites is a bowl of instant oatmeal topped with a banana and walnuts. I put a little vanilla soy milk in it too.
On the weekend, I sometimes make french toast. I add cinnamon and vanilla to the egg-milk mixure. On my plate, I pour a little maple syrup on my french toast which makes it really scrumptious. Fresh strawberries or a banana goes well with this too.
I've been known to eat left over pizza or lasagna for breakfast. There's delicious any time of the day!

I used to be like you babyboomergirl, not having breakfast much at all in my 20's and early 30's.
And my breakfasts right now, remain modestly small as I outlined earlier on type of food in this thread. So imagine, I used to eat even less.
It changed when I returned to cycling in my early 30's because I needed something in my stomach to do a bike ride early morning to get to work.. which was 13-16 kms. one way for 14 yrs., depending where I was working. usually the bike ride then and now, where we live in a different city, includes at least 1 hill 6-10% grade to chug up or more hills, depending what I feel like doing/how time I have.
It was also highly critical for long vacation bike rides when we travelled by bike for 5-6 hrs., each day that I eat a substantive breakfast. I have been in 2 different situations where I didn't eat much breakfast and I nearly fainted after cycling for 30-40 kms. in hot humid summer morning at 28-30 degrees C. Experiences like that are scary.
So I have this feeling if you engaged in high cardiovascular exercise early morning for at least 1 hr., that the body would require a breakfast earlier. With running and cycling if one doesn't eat,..a person is geographically stranded outdoors.
If I don't bike, but just walk to catch subway/bus, then a cup of tea, maybe with a fruit would suffice for breakfast.
I know my stomach becomes acclimatized to certain eating patterns and timing. It didn't used to be like that. But then, when I was much younger I didn't have to worry about weight, fitness since I had a high metabolic rate. I am petite and at an excellent fit weight (at age 51) but it does take more conscious regular effort on my part now.

I wished to respond with a bit more detail for babyboomergirl:
In thinking about this, I realized that perhaps you and I might be similar (but not totally): we eat smaller breakfasts.
If I wanted a bigger breakfast on a regular basis, I had better start cutting back on size of supper!

For certain Anno I would have to eat beans around lunch, my system requires effort to digest beans but I enjoy bean dishes at restaurants. I rarely cook beans because of this minor problem for me. Sounds just as a different...as tradtional ASian breakfast, which is rice congee..or a rice porridge cooked in a light soup broth with light green veggies or some chopped cooking meat on top. As you know, it's offered in major Chinatowns in big cities in North America. Certainly enough fans in Vancouver and Toronto. It's been rare I've had this type of breakfast. My mother found the bread-tea or oatmeal thing easier for her in terms of feeding us.
