There is a beauty in Irish girls ..many have dark/black hair and blue eyes..also their skin tone is often fair.In school I saw so often this Celtic appearance.I also like the Irish first names..Aisiling..Maeve..Nimah..Neave When I was in Dublin and visted the heritage mueseums and saw how seafarers used the ports there must be a varied gene pool..Spainish..French ..Potugese..certainly Scottish and Nordic. My dentist a young man with darh hair blue eyes has such beautiful eyelashes ..yes his folk are from Ireland Do the ladies here see a "face" and tie it in with a Nation.
Johnny Cash had roots very near where I live. although diluted by different generations he was alike many men here. We also have the red haired group from Norse here..

On the flip side, I went to school with a girl named Darleen Flanagan, who was ebony skin-toned. No, her family did not come over on slave ships. Someone simply married an Irisher at some point, and the DNA skipped over any light coloring. lol (She was quite pretty)
My husband has no idea who his bio-dad is, and he looks quite Scottish-English-Irish, pallor and all. My English-Irish mom had a similar pale look, but you can see my Dad's Slavic features in me too, especially the nose part. I decided long ago to keep the nose I was born with, despite the fact other kids made fun of it way back when. Except for the hair tint, I'm keeping what God gave me. lol

I'm not sure that the price matters to poor people who smoke or drink. In that part of our family where government checks are received by young adults, most spend money on booze and cigs first, everything else second. Then they borrow & beg (and maybe even steal) til the next check comes.
As a nurse who seriously smoked for 27 years, I swore to God I would quit when the price of a pack reached a buck, but no, I kept right on smoking. I would pick a used "butt" up off the street if I had to, rather than go through nicotine withdrawal... It was only when a doctor-friend advised me that if I quit smoking before menopause, I would greatly lessen my chances of getting lung cancer. His advice came at a really low point in my life, and I thought if I could get this monkey off my back, maybe I could handle the other serious issues as well. So I took it one day at a time, and 16 years later, so far so good!

I hope this does not sound rude or arrogant, but when I quit smoking (in my early 20's) it was fairly easy. I think it was because when I started, it was to impress my teen friends, and I never intended to make it a longtime habit. I had always been into exercise.
As with alcohol, I added up the cost of smoking for an entire month, tax included, and compared it to my net income. That seemed to help alot. No, you do not sound rude or arrogant, Anne. Your smoking to impress your friends years ago as you have described, apparently did not turn into the severe problem others have had to contend with, THANK GOD!!!!! I've known "recreational substance abusers" who only did alcohol, nicotine, heroin, marijuana, meth, LSD, cocaine, etc on weekends, and they did not seem to progress to physiological addiction status. And then there are many who do become seriously addicted to their drug of choice. Time and time again over the years, I've heard some heroin addicts say they were eventually able to get straight from heroin, but they were never able to overcome their severe craving for nicotine. And yes, there are people who rob and assault others to get cigarette money. It's a new day out there, fellow boomers. At $8 bucks a pack, we are talking major money, so young teens who are hooked will invade homes and rob people at gunpoint, not only for crack, but for cigarette money too. I had nurse friends who never smoked at work yet they were consumed with smoking at home and at social events. And vice-versa. We used to call them "play" smokers. We "serious" smokers had a butt hanging out of our mouth even in the bathroom. In truth, serious smokers are seriously addicted to nicotine, and stopping for them apparently is a whole different ball game then for other types of smokers. Thank God nowadays there are in-hospital programs and medication to help those who really are committed to quitting this lethal drug. I will not allow any form of tobacco or any mind-altering substance (like alcohol) served in my home. I did not want my child thinking it was okay to put alcohol or any other dangerous mind-altering substance into his body, and I did not want visitors to think it was okay to drink any form of alcohol in my house, especially since I have no way of telling who is seriously addicted and who is not. I'm ashamed that I ever smoked, but glad that I was able to find the strength to quit. Other than dealing with loss in my life, quitting smoking is the hardest thing I have ever done.

Josie, at $8.00 per pack, assuming 2 packs a day, that's $16 per day, or....times 365 days per year: $5,840!!! per year to spend on a toxic drug that KILLS.
If that is not enough incentive to make anyone quit, I don't know what is! Intellectually, I totally agree with you, Anne. It makes absolutely no sense for anyone to smoke for ANY reason. Yet I remember a time when I would pick up a used cigarette butt FROM THE STREET, rather than go without that "fix" of nicotine. The only cardinal rule I had was that I would not commit an illegal act to afford cigarettes. Yet many people would do ANYTHING to get nicotine. Money means absolutely nothing when you are going through nicotine withdrawal. As hard as that is to understand, it's reality for many who are seriously addicted to this drug. Heck, as a nurse, I unconsciously lit 2 cigarettes and had them both in my mouth as I watched my own mother take her last breath in an ICU at age 59 from heart disease and complications of long term tobacco use. (I was near so much oxygen and could have blown everyone up) Money meant nothing, my health meant nothing.....as long as I could have cigarettes by my side. I never thought I would EVER be able to quit....until the day I did. Everyone who has a serious addiction to nicotine or any other addictive substance has the potential for quitting. But the solution for each is different, depending on the individual. I wish I knew how to explain it better......

Josie, if I can remember to do so, I'm watching Top Chef tonight. I've never seen it and people are raving about it. Since we purchased our Thanksgiving Cook-Off prizes from their site, I feel the need to see it at least once. I understand this is the last show. Last night's "Top Chef" finale sounded truly entertaining, from what "Time" had to say: http://tunedin.blogs.time.com/2009/12/10/top-chef-watch-bad-robot/?xid=rss-topstoriesjawjaw: I love those cooking/food shows too, especially Paula Deen and Guy Fieri, who cracks me up with his special way of sharing his thoughts on the restaurants he visits.

MOONLIGHT & MISTLETOE starring Tom Arnold of all people. A 2008 movie on DVD (library) is a nice little Xmas movie.
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM-BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN is a sequel that is just as good as the original. Ben Stiller saves the day (or rather the night).

Thank you for taking a look at what I've managed to uncover so far. (It's a labor of Christmas love) Some is easy to find; I'm sure I've missed a few. (Add any if you find more)I think I have a good sampling. A few stations are doing "marathons" of certain classic shows in the days ahead, so you'll have to check your listings for those in your area. Note: These are all listed in Eastern time.
Recommended viewing tonight: 7:00pm & 9:15pm TNT The Wizard of Oz (1939) A classic tale.

I really like "Christmas Vacation," Dotsie. It's just tooooo funny! I also like "The Christmas Shoes" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0330152/My favorite is virtually never shown on television anymore. It's called "The Gift of Love: A Christmas Story" starring Lee Remick, Angela Lansbury, and Polly Holliday. The screenplay was written by Earl Hamner of the Waltons fame, and to me it is a classic story of Christmas hope and new beginnings. I do wish they would put it out on DVD. (I was fortunate enough to buy a homemade copy of this made-for-TV version, and I made it into a DVD. It's not the best quality like one professionally done, but it's priceless to me. Movie description: "Bearing a marked resemblance to It's a Wonderful Life, "The Gift of Love: A Christmas Story" stars Lee Remick as a woman plagued by profound emotional and business problems. It's getting close to Christmas, but Remick is hardly in the mood to celebrate, feeling that her life has lost its purpose. She is revitalized by a dream in which she is reunited with her recently deceased mother (Angela Lansbury ), who guides Remick through an inspiring replay of her Depression-era childhood. Filmed on loca tion in Vermont, the made-for-TV The Gift of Love was originally aired five days before Christmas in 1983." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085593/
