This isn't just about walking but I put it here so I wouldn't cover up other active posts.

I'm writing an article about boomers and exercise. What forms of exercise are you and your friends doing at midlife? This would be most helpful. Thanks.

I'm playing racquetball 2-3 times a week. (bad for my knees, I know, but it's the only fun exercise that I keep doing) I've also started walking with a friend 3-4 times a week, for about 2 miles at a time. We've only been walking for for about3 weeks, but I can already tell a difference. Not in weight loss, but in lung capacity and speed of our pace.

You know what my answer is: cycling. I've been at it since I returned to it when I was 31. During non-snow,non-ice seasons/times, I cycle at least on weekends (twice per wk.) when the temp. is at freezing or a shade above.

all other warmer temp., I cycle approx. 4-6 times per wk. Rides during work days is 15 kms. 1 way...on weekends each day then, averages 40-85 kms. per ride. Yes, it takes time, but am a morning person. When sun is shining over the mountains, I'm ready to jump onto bike..especially when traffic is nearly non-existent.

I have met many women at mid-life (which I would define around late 20's or early 30's and onward) who returned to cycling. Probably because once after you get the bike, right clothing and helmet, you pay no fitness club fees...

Gives a busy woman the flexbility to do it whenever she wants --by herself or with someone nearby. And in my opinion, it's safer than jogging by yourself.

In snowy areas I snowshoe. Several years ago, I used to x-country ski.

Walking for me is necessary....we don't have a car. I seem to average about 1/2 hr. -1 hr. of walking 4-5 times weekly whether or not I did some cycling on that same day.

ANd when I don't get too lazy in evenings, I do some floor exercises --simple yoga, pilates and abit of tai chi warm-ups for stretching, balance... 1/2 hr. Some years I was quite regular...nearly every day. Now I've fallen off the wagon....better get back into it. It's to help me in other sports and relieve muscle tension.

Since we don't have a car, most of our vacations do involve some form of exercise, as a means of moving self around ..being mobile.
