If I were to come visit you,(Don’t pull up that draw bridge!…This is just hypothetically speaking), what would you show me in your area, (in a radius of 30 miles), that you think is something really special; be it a shopping mall, nature, a city, university…whatever? We get house guests rather frequently, and I usually do some sight seeing with them. Showing the area I live in through other eyes makes me value what we have more. There are so many interesting places in our immediate neighbourhood that it is sometimes hard to choose where to go to. But for a day’s excursion I suppose I would show the city we live closest to. It’s called Augsburg ( 2000 years old), nicknamed the fountain city, because of the gorgeous fountains, on every corner. It has a mammoth pedestrian area, hundred’s of café’s and beautiful old buildings, all rebuilt and renovated after the war. We have cobblestone streets, little theatres and antique and art gallery sections. It’s anything but an old sleepy city. Augsburg is a pulsating jazz and blues city, and holds jazz festivals several times a year. You would think you were in New Orleans, with people dancing on the streets, and combo bands playing between street artists. Augsburg is about a 15 minute drive from our house. AUGSBURG Now what would you show me?

Oh Mountain Ash, a tea room, would be my cup of tea. Falkland Palace is how I imagine Scotland to be. It’s interesting that a hunting lodge was transformed into a sophisticated Renaissance palace. And I wold love to stroll through the Palace gardens. Thanks for the little tour Mountain. Orchid, I’m a big lighthouse fan; got several miniatures in my home. Needless to say, you live in one of the most attractive spots in this world. We loved our Vancouver vacation, and the pictures awoke many beautiful memories. When we were in Stanley Park they held a huge Scottish parade. Men with quilt skirts marched through with their bagpipes. It was a treat. I can understand you being such an avid cyclist. Stanley Park is made for cycling. Wow, loved the picture of the science world. And what a beautiful view you have from your balcony! Everybody check this out! I know views like that in Vancouver cost an arm and a leg. Their prices are equivalent to NY. We missed the anthropology museum, and after seeing the pictures all I can say is darn darn! Quote:
“Imagine unique, hand-crafted chocolates that caress your taste buds like nectar of the gods. And pastries with the lightness of an angel's kiss.”…
Is that me drooling over my keyboard? It was a treat to see your paintings again Orchid. After the beautiful photographs it was an interesting new view.
Celtic, I’m usually the one taking the pictures too. That’s the plight of being a mommy. Lol..I didn’t take the photo I posted, just downloaded it from internet.
This is fun.

I have to ask you first the typical travel agent's questions, Hannelore. What time of the year and how long for? Personally, summer and spring are the best times to come to London when festivals (most of which are free) in town adds a tremendous lot to enjoying the city and the people. As to permanent tourist fixtures, you'd be better off having a personal guide...ME!!!..than going with a group sightseeing tour. I would, however, take you to explore the city on foot. Depending on duration of stay, I can show you as much of the city as you can walk it in a day. Day 1: Within an 8-mile radius and do-able in a day: Starting point will be Trafalgar Square towards Whitehall, on both sides of which will be Banqueting House, the Cenotaph, the War Rooms, Downing Street. At the end of Whitehall is Parliament Square where you find Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament (which you can visit and watch democracy in action. Tickets are applied for with our local MP's, so, you'd have to know someone to have access to that) Then, proceed to Westminster Abbey, cross the road to Buckingham Palace * (which is only open to the public in the summer time). The changing of the guards takes place at 11:00 A.M. so, if you want to see them prancing about in bearskin or redcoats, this walking tour can be done counterclockwise. A meal of fish and chips in-between, a very typical British fare to be washed down with lager or cider, if you like warm beer, that's on tap too. * Trooping of the Colour is in June. You may catch a glimpse of Elizabeth R and the Royal gang as they process from the Palace down the Mall to Horseguards. Day 2: East end of London starting from Covent Garden (although Eliza Doolittle no longer hawk flowers there) St Paul's Cathedral (you can walk the aisle where Diana processed for her wedding or sit by the steps and sing "feed the birds tuppence a bag"), Tower Bridge (the fancy one tourists often mistake for London Bridge...the original which is in Arizona BTW), Tower of London (the Crown Jewels are there, and site of many beheadings under Royal Warrant...Anne Boleyn for one). Tea and scones at respite. How very British, eh? Go for a Shakespeare play in the summer at The Globe or Jack the Ripper Walk at night (if you go for that sort). Day 3: Cross the Thames River to the London Borough of Greenwich (where I live and 7 miles out of the city centre). The Greenwich Meridian Line, Royal Observatory, Cutty Sark (it was partly burnt down a few months ago but, should be back to form soon) the Millenium Dome (now O2 Arena), Queen's Palace, which was the Monarch's residence prior to Buckingham), the Naval College...respite at Trafalgar Tavern overlooking Thames River. Night-time: A West End show. British production, of course. There is so much to see and do in London. I could go on and on but, rest your feet for now. Geesh, I should send a fee note to the London Tourist Board!

Meredith, had no idea you live so close to the beaches. And so close to Disney Land! Bet Louise envies you for that. And I envy you for living so close to the beach. I’d probably pack my lap top and a picnic and go at least every week. Are you a beach person? Lola, I love touring cities by foot. One of the most interesting cities by foot was Seattle. They actually have sewerage lids, with maps engraved on them with a red dot showing the tourist the spot where he or she was standing. I’m sure London couldn’t even be done in 6 months. I think the challenge is in choosing what to do, when so much is offered. Warm beer? Okaaay, I’ll take a diet coke please. Do you think I could make one of those guards laugh? How about between you and me? Oh, the Jack the ripper Walk at night sounds prickling! Would love that! Got to admit, I’m not a Shakespeare fan, although I had Shakespeare courses in college. I’d rather go to a raunchy English pub at night, and sing "Um pa pa, um pa pa that's how it goes,...um pa pa um pa pa everyone knows...." remember that from Oliver Twist? Celtic I think it’s romantic to go on a Ferris wheel in the middle of a city. How far do you live from Belfast? And how far are you from London? A portibellow mushroom burger? Yes, I would try that. After I eat it, the name would probably have to be changed to pointybelly mushroom burger, ... Where will the next virtual tour be? Hey and my feet aren't even hurting!

If you were for a visit, there are a few places I would take you.... We'd take lunch and go to Pemaquid Point. These were my stomping grounds for years. Whenever life got difficult, I'd walk out on these rocks and sit for hours. The sound of the ocean is deafening, the smell of the salt air exhilerating! It would clear my head every time. Here is a shot of Damariscottia, one of my favorite little towns on the coast...just beautiful! Louisa has spoken about Ogunquit many times...Kennebunk is also nice and very close to Ogunquit. Here you'll see a few photos and even a slide show. There are too many to describe and I'd want to take you everywhere! http://www.visitthekennebunks.com/Pages/media_room.htmlhttp://ogunquit.com/about.cfm

Some great places where some of us call home. Hannelore, I love that city of fountains. So Germany has the wonderful old architecture...and we have the bears, whales.... (I understand the bears are nearly non-existent in Germany?)
Wonder if mrs. madness is reading any of this..wonder where she is...

Hannelore, I'm going to try to describe the Pacific coastline here. It goes on a meandering diagonal, from northwest to southeast. So if I go due west 50 miles, I hit Santa Monica and Venice Beach. Venice Beach is in all the movies where they show the crazy beach scene, the chainsaw juggler and everyone rollerblading with very little clothing.
North of Santa Monica is Malibu. Rich Hollywood types with beach houses. Due South of Santa Monica (or 40 miles due SW of me) is Palos Verdes. I don't know if you've heard of these or not. Then the coast goes east for a while -- Long Beach, then Huntington Beach which has international surfing contests in the summer. Newport Beach (20 miles due south of me) and then the coast goes a little east but more south. Are you confused yet?
35 miles SSE is Laguna Beach, a neat artsy town with tons of galleries and 3 different summer-long art festivals.
Laguna is my favorite shopping beach town, because of all the galleries. Venice is the best for people-watching and to take out-of-town visitors who want to see the freaky SoCali. San Clemente is my favorite beach to actually walk on the beach.
In the summer, beach towns are 10-20 degrees cooler than we are inland.
25 miles due north of me are the foothills and then the mountains. Mountains have snow right now! We never snow down here. Kathy (of Rick and June) lives in those mountains, but further up a bit.
This whole area is beautiful to me! Mountains and beaches, and 75 miles east is full desert, then Palm Springs at 90. Of course, we're known for our high housing prices -- especially beach towns! -- expensive shopping, and women who get plastic surgery every 6 months. (Yes, men get it too.)

You ladies are so blessed! Beautiful places, indeed! We'd have to venture farther than 30 miles to hit the hot spots here. We'd go to NASA. We'd spend an evening in the Ft. Worth Stockyards. We'd raft down the Guadalupe River. We'd catch the bluebonnets in bloom. We'd get a houseboat and fish the Rio Grande. We'd take a trip on a steamboat through the swampy piney woods of Northeast Texas. We'd take a trip on foot through the Big Thicket. We'd visit the Texas wineries. We'd catch a few hoe-downs and blue grass festivals. We'd go to Corpus Christi and feed the seagulls while playing on the beach. We'd make a trip to Busch Gardens and dance with the butterflies. Or, we could rent a condo on my hometown's lake and just sit and talk. Yeppers, you'd have to stay six months, 'cause I only listed a small bit of what we'd be doing.

Ladyjane, I got goosebumps looking at the beautiful pictures and listening to the cool music accompanying them. Just two years ago Hubby and I vacationed in Conway Maine! I particularly remember the antique old 5 and 10 cent store. I would love to go with you on the cliffs and breathe in the salt air and listen to the ocean roar. We could sing together “ I am woman, hear me roar!” Bet we’re louder. Lol , thanks sooo much for posting these. No, I’m not confused Meredith, because I have been in your area as well! When our sons were 13 and 15 we took a trip along the California coast and spent a day at Venice Beach. I still have the t-shirt I bought there. It’s the best quality t- shirt I’ve ever owned.I just pictured you roller-skating with purple hair along the wide walks. We missed Laguna Beach, darn darn … I could eat up artsy towns. Just love ‘em.. You got it all, beaches and mountains. How perfect is that! Gimster, you’re right. 30 miles is nothing in the big old USA. Catching bluebonnets in bloom? What fun! I’ve never been on a Steamboat before. A trip through the Big Thicket sounds wild. I bet you got bears there, and a hoe down? I haven’t visited your corner of the world yet; Sounds enticing. Gosh this world is beautiful.

Hannelore, nice to know you came so close 2 years ago...Conway (which is actually in New Hampshire just over the Maine line) is only about 40 minutes from where I live! MA, please elaborate on your suggestion...sounds good but I'm not sure if I understand. When I added my "tour" I concentrated on the coastline because I love it the most! Then we have the mountains, so I thought I'd add this...so many nice places here.... http://www.bethelmaine.com/

Ladies, your information, links and photos are just awesome! If you came to my island in Hawaii, I would suggest the authentic Paradise Cove Luau, the all-day Polynesian Cultural center event, hiking up Diamond Head Crater, a visit to Dole Pineapple Plantation, going to our many lovely beaches, snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, and there is so much more : ) http://www.visit-oahu.comhttp://www.paradisecove-luau.com/photo_gallery.htmlhttp://www.hawaiiweb.com/html/hanauma_bay_beach.htmlEnjoy!!

If anyone were to come to Minneapolis, I would suggest you skip the winter months and come in the spring, summer or fall.
Minneapolis is a beautiful city built around the Mississippi River and many large lakes. We have a wonderful system of drives, walkways and bikeways that move from one end of the city to the other all around lakes, river and creeks. And all of this is in the inner city itself.
Outside the city we currently boast the largest mall in America (Mall of America), if that is what you wish, with a childrens play area, a water park and several nearby hotels. It is actually only 2 miles from my home, and if I feel like mall walking, it's my standby. Many people fly in cheaply, stay at one of the motels, and make a family weekend of the whole thing. Oh, Ikea is there, too.
Minnesota is not known as a tourist destination, but if you are into relaxing, fishing, winter sports, swimming, walking or darn good resturants, we are a pretty good spot for a get away.
See any of you here anytime soon?

If you visited my area, NE Alabama, you could be taken to Tuscumbia, AL, to see the birth home of Helen Keller, and if you visit during the months of June and July, you could attend the Helen Keller Festival, and also see the play, The Miracle Worker. While you are there, why not visit the Alabama Music Hall of Fame (2 miles from my Mom's house, stop in for chocolate pie and coffee)...where people like the Rolling Stones, Elvis, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, and too many other stars to mention, have recorded their music. You can even make a tape of your OWN self singing. Tell David I sent you. He's the manager there and we graduated from school together. Don't forget to visit the gift shop there where they carry MY BOOK! Wuhoo! If you travel about 5 miles, over the bridge, pass grandmaw's house, you can see The Frank Lloyd Wright Rosenbaum House. Go about 60 miles west of Tuscumbia and you'll find Huntsville, AL where you can visit the US Space and Rocket Center. Go through the museum, take some rides, explore the universe, all at your fingertips. Don't forget...this place offers SPACECAMP! These are just a few items. If you make it that far, let me know. I'll tell you where to eat. You don't want to miss "Dub's Burgers," or a "Towbridges Hot Dog." After those, you can die a happy woman...

orchid, I feel as if I just took a mini vacation. What fantastic pictures. Hannelore, I'm 30 minutes from Niagara Falls and both sides, the Canadian and American, have restaurants, cafes, shopping malls, etc. There are major theme parks in surrounding areas. Southward, there are quaint villages. The Lucy 'n Desi Museum in Jamestown is closeby. Elbert Hubbard built the Roycroft Arts 'n Crafts Village & Hotel in my hometown; the 13th US President lived here; Fisher-Price Factory and Museum and Viddlers' 5 & 10 are here, too. The Tea Cozy, tea shop is fun. There are horse ranches and wild life sanctuaries. I've family working for and at the Buffalo Bills stadium. There's Marine Land, Fantasy Island, Fort Erie and Crystal Beach.

Here is a picture of one of the lakes with a view of downtown (the birthplace of heated and air conditioned above ground walkways, I might add!). and Lake Harriet Band Shell, where outdoor music is played spring, summer and fall. No, we are smart enough to not play outdoors in the winter. And just to show you that the Mall of America has much more than shopping (children's indoor amusement park, legoland, minature golf, some fine resturants, a great movie theater and......) Underwater world.

Louisa, I just saw your question. I'm basically brain dead this week. Yes, we sure do have as much snow. Last week it was beginning to cover my windows. I am not amused. If I shared pics for thsi winter on this thread, NO ONE would ever want to venture near this frozen hell on earth. And it's snowing again right now...

Link to "TEXANS AREN'T ALL BAD' <<< read what a transplanted self-proclaimed x-yankee/Texan has to say. The picture at the beginning of the article is of some of the Texas canyons - awesome. We lived in the Panhandle when we first got married, and visited the Palo Duro Canyon often. There is a musical put on in an outdoor theater with the canyons as the backdrop and used as part of the scenery in the play. It is fittingly called 'TEXAS.' It shows in the evening as the sun sets. One of the comments to the article reads: " I am a Native Texan, from Bryan-College Station home of those Fightin’ Texas Aggies, living in the beautiful state of Idaho. I miss Texas so much that I get together with a group of women we call GRITS. Girls Raised In The South. We are from all over the place. There is nothing better than to get together with your friends that talk like you and cook like you. We also have manners, know how to set the table properly and writeThank You notes. I think some of those “other states” could take some lessons in Suthin’ hospitality. That’s why they say “Texas is a whole nother country”. AMEN....Gig ‘em Aggies !!!" GRITS - thought that was cute!
