eye "floaters"

My right eye has started to have "floaters". It is sooooooo annoying. There is one spot that is very blurry too -- and it doesn't seem to matter if I have my glasses on, my contacts in, or running into walls while trying to find where I laid my glasses after taking my contacts out

anyone have experience with this ?

I've had floaters all my life, lionspaw. I remember seeing them for the first time when I was a kid, and I was convinced I was going blind! Then I read an article about them at the library and was much relieved.
If you haven't had your eyes checked in over a year, it might not be a bad idea.

Yes, and sorry, but get thee to an eye doctor. It may be nothing and it maybe something easily fixed. But, it should probably not be ignored.

Ross is sitting right next to me. He said that floaters by themselves are a benign condition. There are several things that should be ruled out however. If you have not had a recent dilated eye exam, you should get one. Questions the doctor will ask you:

-any associated flashes of light?
-loss of any visual field?
-any sudden visual blackouts?

Ninety nine-plus percent of the time, floaters are just a nuisance, but there's nothing you can do about them.

The reason for the exam is to make sure you're not in that fraction of one percent.

Bottom line, you need to get your eyes examined.

I get floaters all the time and they are annoying, especially if you're trying to look at something. I have my eyes checked every 2-3 years and nothing is wrong except my eyesight is getting worse as I age and I keep spending money on new glasses.

I get them when I'm in the tub...what? What do you mean that's not what you're talking about............oh. Sorry.

Is this something that "runs in the family"? My mom had floaters and when she saw her doctor they discovered she had a detached retina -- I have had the "flashes of light" off and on this past year -- but not since the floaters started -- there does seem to be a "spot" where the vision is "blurred" -- it's always in the same place -- its just reallllly annoying getting old sometimes

also -- putting on contacts you "touch" your eye and when I put on the contact in that same eye I can actually feel a "ridge" where the white stops and the blue begins (sorry I'm not up on my "eye part terms") but it's not that way on my left eye.

I called my insurance company (BCBS) and they said they will not pay for routine eye exams - but if there is a "medical" reason to see the doctor then they will -- so I will make an appointment Monday -- thank you for all your advice !! and thank Ross too Dotsie

okay - it's official -- I'm not 20 anymore

went to the eye doctor - a cataract/retina specialist - and he checked both my eyes -- there are no tears or signs of trouble

because of the family history of detached retina he said to have my eyes checked yearly and gave me a list of "danger signs" but other than that -- just get used to the floaters

what's funny is that since i know there's nothing i can do about it and its no big deal -- they don't bug me so much
