I'm sure many of us have at one time or another been involved in a dispute that's come between a mother-in-law and a daughter-in -law -- even if only because you're part of a family where such a dispute happens. (In those cases, it's often hard to know whose side to be "on," because you can see both sides of the issue.)
With the holidays looming -- Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, Christmas tumbling in on us imminently -- we all know these issues will likely develop again.
I know in my experience with my first mother-in-law, I never had any idea WHAT things I said would set her off. Speaking in her presence was like a walk in a land mine.
(Nor did I know she would have such bad taste in presents. On Christmas, I always knew that she'd give me something that either didn't fit, was ugly, or was awful for some other reason.)
40 years later I can laugh about this. But at the time I was feeling like she saw me as an OUT-LAW rather than an "in-law."

One year she gave me a gray cardigan sweater that probably qualified as my "Worst. Present. Ever." First of all, I hate cardigans and never wear them. Secondly, gray was not my color. And thirdly, I don't know where she found it, but it looked like a dollar store buy -- it had cables and the cabling on one sleeve was TOTALLY different than the cabling on the other sleeve. ACKKK!!
