Recipes and such - 10/10/05 08:07 PM

These are some good recipe sites:

www.kraftfoods.com
www.cooks.com
www.meals.com

I normally use the first one bc you can search through the recipes quickly, plus you can sort the recipes by preparation time, number of ingredients, etc.

Karen,
I especially like the meals.com one. It gives all kinds of tips too. Don't you love that Halloween cake on the homepage? How cool is that!

Thanks for sharing!

Re: Recipes and such - 10/10/05 11:23 PM

What's terrible is that I have a lot of cookbooks, but the ease of looking up internet recipes usually wins over the cookbooks collecting dust. But, I did get one out the other day and made a hashbrown casserole. It was pretty darn good!

You're welcome for sharing. I hope they'll be helpful!

Very, and take heart... I am the very same way. I have tons of cookbooks, never miss getting the 20XX year of the Taste of Home Cookbook, never, and I hardly EVER cook! So... I do the same thing. But I LOVE, absolutely LOVE reading them.

If one could get fat reading recipes, I would be "blimp woman" as I am forever reading them to see what I can change, make better or at least different. I love looking at pictures of food...

I love the kraft food site. It's just like looking at the food magazines while I wait in line at the grocery store.

Have you ever looked at www.southernliving.com? Check out the Food section. It's my favorite.

Re: Recipes and such - 10/12/05 11:01 AM

Would someone teach my husband when you grill outdoors, on the grill, LOL, you do not walk away and come back when YOU are ready?! I have been working on him for 14 yrs. Nothing has helped! It would be really funny, if I didn't have to eat the meat! LOL Chomp, pull, chew, at least try. OH the charred meat I have eaten in the name of love! [Mad]
Posted by: Danita

Re: Recipes and such - 10/12/05 05:52 PM

Have you tried chaining him to the grill? That might work. That way if he walks away, the grill goes with him.

Just an idea!

:0)

Danita

p.s. the other option is to buy him a "clip on timer" (pampered chef used to carry them). He clips it to his shirt - sets it for 5 mins, walks away....beeep beeep beeep, he's reminded "oh, duh, I'm grilling outside". This type of timer has saved me from burning things in the oven!

Re: Recipes and such - 10/13/05 03:35 AM

Humm Danita that timer idea just might work but for me I would let SLUGGO start the meat then when he wandered away (very short attention span) I just finished it myself, why fight City hall and besides meat is too expensive to let it be turned into jerky, LOL....now this is lame but one JERKY in the house is enough, LOL, sorry couldn't resist.... [Eek!] [Big Grin]
Posted by: Danita

Re: Recipes and such - 10/13/05 07:16 AM

ohhhh so funny! I happen to love jerky!

Well, the reason you would buy Sluggo a timer - is so that he could put on his big boy panties - and finish what he started.

I have pretended for 20 years to not know how to use the grill. It has served me well. Twice a year he grills, and I don't have to cook!

Wooo hooo! grill on guys! (with your timers to keep you focused!)

Re: Recipes and such - 10/14/05 12:59 PM

Speaking of great recipe advice and kitchen timers:

Did you ladies know that when the timer dings, that means you have 15 more minutes before the smoke alarm goes off? 20 if it's a cake! Then you have at least 5 more minutes before anything catches on fire.

BTW, we have a little patio grill that's been in the box for maybe 15 years. Neither of us knows how to open the box.

My avocado nut cookies are legendary. They bounced. Even my sweet tooth husband refused to eat them, so I fed them to the squirrels.

To my knowledge, none of the squirrels died, so they couldn'ta been that bad, could they?

They bounced? Bounced? You're kidding, right?

You could be on to something.
What child wouldn't want to eat cookies that bounce?

Re: Recipes and such - 10/16/05 11:54 AM

They bounced. I swear. Not a real bouncy bounce, but kind of thud-and-bounce.

Or maybe it was bounce-and-thud. I'm trying to forget. [Roll Eyes] [Roll Eyes]

Meredith.
Your bouncy cookies sounds like my first attempt at a gingerbread house dough-after putting it in the fridge like directions said I took it out and it was rock hard- I threw it at floor and it thudded-almost cracked floor A real loud thud!

I have a package of jello that's about 20 years old. Whaddaya think'll happen if I try to make it? Friends who hear this story feel sorry for me and give me jello recipes -- like if I haven't used it in 20 years, your magic recipe will inspire me to become Ms. Jello Chef?? [Razz]

Jawjaw, if you want my jello... Maybe the trick to good jello is aging it???

Re: Recipes and such - 10/17/05 05:32 PM

Personally, I think Jell-O is over rated... who's with me on this? I mean, what a waste of dessert. If you actually going to EAT dessert, why would you eat Jell-O when you could have chocolate?

Meredith, I'm jellin' like a fellin'....you?

JJ

Re: Recipes and such - 10/17/05 10:24 PM

JJ, I'm definitely with you on the JellO thing. It's one of those things I'm waiting to experience when I end up in a low-budget nursing home and have no choice. I figure if I don't eat too much of it now, it will be a real treat by then. Same with Spam (my apologies to all the Jello and Spam lovers out there).

BTW, you're not including hot jello chocolate pudding, are you? I had hot jello chocolate pudding once about 15 years ago and never forgot how wonderful it tasted. But do you think I've ever remembered to go out and buy a box and make it for myself?

Now where did I put that bag of mini Kit-Kat's...

Re: Recipes and such - 10/18/05 12:05 AM

One of my favorite diet dishes I call:

Senior salad (I call it this because I used to eat it at the Senior Center where I volunteered)

YOu take sugerless jello (cook and chill it)
Mix fruit ######## (drained)
and Whipped cream! Voilala!

An instant desert - and you don't even need teeth to eat it (killing myself here!)

Senior salad? what a hoot! Girl, you are too funny.

Eagle, that sounded yummy... I might even want to try that one!

JJ

Re: Recipes and such - 10/18/05 02:49 AM

Oh I used to make that. It's great.
Thanks for reminding me of it!
But we never called it Senior salad, we just called it jello with fruit and whipped cream on top.
My family had no imagination!

Re: Recipes and such - 10/18/05 01:11 PM

Jawjaw, I obviously think jello is WAY overrated, else why would it still be in the box after all those years? And I'm with you on the chocolate! That, or premium ice cream.

I always thought spam is what you fed your dog when you ran out of the good stuff.

Re: Recipes and such - 10/18/05 02:55 PM

Okay... I suppose this is where I'll get called some names but I like spam... especially if it's fried and then a big old slab of Velvelta cheese is melted over it. Yummm... I can feel my arteries clogging as I type this...

Re: Recipes and such - 10/18/05 05:20 PM

Ohhhhhh J.J.,

You are going to be in soooo much trouble with Chatty.

This receipe is neither healthy OR lowfat.
(I hate to be around when she reads this!)

T.V., you MIX the whipped cream in the set jello (v.s. putting it on top)...it makes it more like a desert v.s.jello with fruit with cream on top!

Re: Recipes and such - 10/18/05 08:28 PM

Spam, never tried it. Velveeta cheese, that's another story. My son just whipped up one of his favorites: Velveeta and salsa nuked for Tostito dipping.

Re: Recipes and such - 10/18/05 08:53 PM

Oh Danita that sounds even yummier!
I'm not crazy about Spam though. I remember eating it as a kid. Haven't tried it lately and I've never had it with cheese on top.
Does any one remember a product called Fruit Float? You mixed it with milk and it made a fruity pudding thing? I used to like that stuff but haven't seen it in years.

Re: Recipes and such - 10/18/05 09:02 PM

Dotsie, my kids love the Velveeta and salsa dip! They love it for the super bowl.

I remember a recipe my mom made with jello, (jello is also not one of my favorites) it was a cake.

Vanilla was added to the hot jello, and melted. Then chunks of angel food cake were placed in a cake or jello mold and the jello mixture poured on top.

My mom can't remember much about the recipe, do any of you?

Be fun to make this again. It was a nice dessert for summer time.

Re: Recipes and such - 10/18/05 09:53 PM

I actually use to make the red/white/blue Jell-O thingies that you had to make, then lean the glass against the wall in the frig, then add more, then yada...yada...

Who would have ever thought we would get so much mileage out of a Jell-O forum...teehee...

Re: Recipes and such - 10/19/05 12:06 AM

Oh Lord and I'm suppose to be the food police here BUT ladies, on the food channel just last week I was thoroughly entertained by The Third Annual Spam cook-off. There were 6000 people there all walking around tasteing the spam creations. It was awesome. My favorite was when two women contestants took sliced spam, hot dog size pieces and put them on a stick and dipped them into a thick corn meal batter and deep fried them. They looked so good. Their entry won second place in taste and originality. You would have to see the many delicious looking creations to believe them, truly awesome...Also does anyone know that Hawaii is the spam capital of the world and most upper class, expensive restaurants there have dishes designed around this meat??

I saw the Spam-a-thon too!!! [Smile]
My dad used to love Spam!! [Embarrassed] I never tasted it..& don't think I want too!!! [Smile]
My mom used to make something called Ambrosia with jello....I have to ask her how it was made. She always made one to bring to family gatherings.

Re: Recipes and such - 10/19/05 08:26 PM

I loveeeeeee Abrosia! However, I don't recall Mom putting you know what in her's.... hm, that's a new twist.

So the Spam-a-thon winners made Spam-Foudue? How clever! Hawaii, eh? And all this time I thought it was Alabama...Hey, maybe we should have a Spam-a-ton here in Alabama, yes? We could call it BAMA-SPAM-A

What?

SPAM-A-BAMA?

WHAT? WHAT?

BAM-A-SPAM?

okay, okay, I'll quit...teehee..

Re: Recipes and such - 10/19/05 08:43 PM

I thought I was the only person in the world who has never tasted Spam!!

My mom used to make the best ambrosia and stupid me, I never got the recipe from her.
Posted by: Dotsie

Re: Recipes and such - 10/19/05 11:31 PM

We have Spam bowlin' at the Hon Fest. Don't you love it?

I make ambrosia without jello too. It's simple. I'm sure not quite fancy enough for chatty's taste, but here goes:

mandarin oranges
pineapple chunks
red and green cherries at Christmas
pecans
mini marshmallows
coconut
enough sour vream to mix

Be careful adding the cherries. I usuall do that after it is mixed so the color doesn't run. I think that's everything.

Re: Recipes and such - 10/20/05 01:50 AM

Dotsie fortunately I have no particular cuisine tastes, I can eat and can cook anything from Baked Alaska to Hobo Stew and have too. I am as at home with Prime Rib of Beef as I am with a White Castle hamburger. I thoroughly enjoy other peoples cooking as well, maybe more since theres no work for me involved.

Hint: If you'd like to add the cherries along with everything else, rinse them in cold water first and then NO color will run....

Re: Recipes and such - 10/21/05 03:49 AM

Dotsie your recipe sounds quite tasty but how is it all held together???? Hey what do you mean not fancy enough for me? Me the White Castle junkie!!!

On the angel food creation of yesteryear you mentioned above, take any Angel food cake you would make (or buy) I buy mine. Then break it up into a bunt cake pan. Make the jello and let sit about 10 minutes then pour jello mixture into the bunt pan over the cake. Put in fridge until jello sets. You can also stir cool whip into the jello before pouring. Let cool & harden and turn over onto dish and serve...not hard really and tastes good. Any flavor jello will do. Oh and spray the bunt pan first just slightly with food spray so the mix comes out easily when hardened.

Re: Recipes and such - 10/21/05 05:26 PM

Chatty, the sour cream acts as a dressing and makes it moist.

Sunshine, I've never heard of that recipe. Sorry, no help here.

My sister is the queen of jello in our family. She has all these fun jello molds for every occasion. She always uses sugar free jello for the Diabetics in the family.

She brought my 20 year old son a funny gift on Sunday when she came for dinner while he was home from college. She proudly presented him with two small plates of orange football helmets and orange footballs. His school color is orange. What a hoot. Then she told him he could keep the plates for entertaining at his apartment. They were part of the gift. He's 20 and she's still making him jello molds. She got a huge smile and laugh out of him. Gosh I love her.
