Loss of hair on stomach

Loss of hair on stomach - 10/02/05 04:52 AM

I never had this happen with any other dog we have owned. My new puppy Cookie will almost be a year soon. She just recently lost most of her hair on her stomach. She's smooth as could be.

Has anyone ever had this happen? Could we not be feeding her the right food? Could she be needing vitamins?

Her one year checkup is due in January--but we may take her in November, when she's a full year.
I am hoping there is nothing wrong! It's beginning to freak me out!

Hmmm. Well, could be several things. Does she lay down a lot? Sometimes the hair will rub off. Or, if she was purchased from a breeder or a pet store, which buys from puppy mills, it might be something more nefarious. I'd get it checked out.

Email me if you want further info.

Could it be mange? I've never had this happen but have heard of it. Poor baby.

Is she scratching the area? Does it seem irritated in any way? If so, I'd have her checked by a vet.

Was it all of a sudden, or a gradual loss? When you pet her did hair fall off into your hands?

Does her breed normally have hair on their tummies when they're an adult?

How does the rest of the fur on her body look?

It could be this: puppies are like us in a way, we lose our baby hair and it's replaced by our "grown up" hair. Kinda like losing our baby teeth and getting our adult teeth.

Kay B, my puppy also lost hair in patches on stomach, neck and chin areas. Skin was hairless and rough feeling but had no signs of being scratched or bloody. But he was itching the areas. Vet told me to get hydrocortisone creme at the store and rub on affected areas. I had some cream at home and used it and actually saw relief sweep over his little face! At the store I found some hydro spray in the pet department and that made the job easier. That was about a year ago and he has been fine and all hair grew back without a problem--until this week. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the change of season? He has begun his fall shedding. I started spray treatments last night on a few patches that I found and hopefully it will take care of it. The vet told me that dogs are sensitive-just like people. Some have skin irritations, some have sensitive stomachs and need a different diet, etc.

PS. My dog is a Heinz 57. No puppy mill involved. Black Lab and Alaskan Malamute
