I have one Peg, along with a matching bowling shirt that has a pair of "dice" on them... love that outfit and wouldn't trade it for anything!

Remember the fake fur collars?

Isn't it interesting that poodle skirts are one of the fashions that HAVEN'T come back. Hmmmmmmm.

Can you think of any other fashion which has remained in the past and not brought forward?

LOL! Nahhhh...its actually a Halloween outfit that I bought a bazillion years ago at where else? A car show... The show was for cars of the 50's and 60's and everybody had these cool outfits on. So I bought one of them. Here's the neat thing about this outfit... it fits ANY size... and I do mean ANY... it's so cute and comes with Bobbie socks with poodles on them, a white (expandable) belt and the skit has poodles and rock n roll stuff on it, as does the shirt. There is a bright yellow scarf that comes with it to either tie around your neck, or put your hair up in a ponytail and tie it. The outfit is black/white with a yellow inset for the bowling shirt. There is also a cremlin slip! I already had the rah rah's... (black/white shoes for you youngsters). I cannot tell you how many times this outfit has been borrowed by friends and worn for speeches, parties, costume parties, etc...
What fun!

JawJaw, you and Danita are too young for poodle skirts to be a part of your memory, in fact, I was still a youngster when my older cousins were wearing them. I KNOW I'm older than both of you.

Ahhh now.... you are soooo right! Is she smooth or what?

BUT... I have two older sisters and I recall their skirts... uh huh. Sure do! And of course I use to play dress up with their clothes.

I cut a lot of fabric at my work for poodle skirts. It seems to be quite popular now not just for halloween costumes but for car shows and some restaurants that use the 50's theme. I made one for my granddaughter who was in a school program on the 50's music. I loved the fact that she was learning about my younger days.

I'm not sure if you can buy them, I know that we still have patterns for them and sell material to make them. We also have the poodle applique. Please don't think I'm selling anything I'm just a blue collar worker at Jo-Ann Fabrics, they don't need me to advertise for them lol

How about finding them on e-bay although I like Norah's idea of making your own a lot better.

If you don't sew I'm sure almost anyone can find a dressmaker to put one together for you.

There is a reason poodle skirts have never been resurrected by the fashion industry.......

Well, think about it.....if poodle skirts were flattering on the female body, don't you think we'd see them on the red carpet? How many celebs have you seen wearing a poodle skirt lately? I don't recall ever seeing a photo of one on a celeb from the 50s even.

JJ, reeeeally....... an adjustable poodle skirt - that sounds real sexy. Just don't wear it on a date until after the man falls for you! LOL

Peggy you can order a Poodle skirt just like the ones we use to wear from The Vermont Store catalog...and don't forget the crenalin (?) slips underneath that gave them that flare...

I think I was 12 when the poodle skirts came out. I never had one myself, but I thought they were just great back then. I grew up in the 50's and never felt particularly nostalgic for that time. I'm not sure why.

Re: REMEMBER THE POODLE SKIRTS? - 11/30/05 06:31 PM

Jackie,

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. I am not nostalgic for the 60's either and most music I listen to is from the 70's up to now. I really don't think I'm nostalgic at all about most things and I have wondered why also. I don't enjoy oldies, but I do love movies and B/W photography from the 40's and 50's, but since I was born in 54, it was before my time, or the time when I was aware.

I have to confess, I love to listen to oldies from the 50's and 60's when I happen to hear them. But I don't go out of my way to do that. I think maybe because I have so much I've had to deal with these last few years, I've learned to live moment to mement in the present. But maybe I've always been that way.
