young man on bike

young man on bike - 12/21/06 06:24 AM

Sunday after I packed at Hollywood Market, we were driving down Sunset Boulevard when I heard a huge crashing sound. When I saw what had happened, I told Les to please pull over to see if we could help.

To make the story short: a car was driving 100mph and out of control. It went up on the sidewalk, knocked an 8-foot metal street sign 20 feet, plowed through several metal parking meters, and slammed into a man on a bike. The bike and helmet were crushed. Then the a**hole sped away.

The young man, maybe mid-20s was lying on the sidewalk. There was no visible blood, but I'm sure his internal injuries must have been massive. He was thankfully coherent but unable to move. The paramedics came. We and many other people gave statements to the police. The only good news is, some other men ran after the car and got a picture of the license plate number.

I believe in karma and reincarnation. The @#$*(%! in the car will be lucky to come back as a cockroach.

I prayed all the way home. Please add your voices. I haven't heard anything about this on the news.

meredith, I will certainly add my voice. I am so glad someone got the tag information. I wonder what the guy driving the car was in such a hurry about... Maybe he had just committed another crime or something. SICK!

May I add a similar prayer? My son told me that a boy at his school was killed while riding his bike. A young driver struck him and he died at the scene of the accident. This happened about ten days ago. I can't quite imagine being the parents and receiving that news. God help us. I don't know the family, but have thought about and prayed for them often.

That had to be traumatic for you, Meredith. That poor guy. I will be praying also and for the driver who did this. What sort of mindset would drive off like that? Someone needs real help.

Here in Vegas we have been having a rash of road accidents due to kids 'drag racing' down the city streets. They caused several bad accidents and killed a pregnant woman carrying her first child. The roads are only as safe as the driver of the cars are. I bet that hit and run driver of the guy on the bike was drunk...

Or on some other substance. Which is NEVER an excuse.

and I keep seeing his face, and I wanted so badly to have magic powers and make him better.

But paramedics and prayers are the best we can do.

My daughter was following a young woman in a jeep that lost control and rolled. She was almost hysterical and still remembers it like it was yesterday. It really is traumatic to see something like that and it takes a long time to get over.

Meredith and Dotsie: I'm adding this young man and the family who lost their son to my prayers. It is awful, even worse at christmas time.
