Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/14/05 10:19 PM

Ok Ladies,

I didn't want to cover up an active thread - so I put this here.

It is not a joke. It's a "getting to know you" exercise.

Here's what I want everyone to do.

Write down three things about yourself that probably nobody on the forum knows. Two Have to be true, and one has to be false.

Then the rest of us guess which is which.

I'll start:

1. I was an intelligence specialist in the military for 10 years.

2. I've been married to the same man twice.

3. I used to be a body builder in my early 20's.

O.K., it's in your court!

1. I took the written test to be on The Millionaire Show
2. I've been pregnant a dozen times.
3. I used to pilot a hot air balloon.

I would have to say #2 is wrong. (even though you have a slew of children).

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/14/05 11:54 PM

Nope, # 3 was the made up one!
I'm gonna say your # 2 is made up, Danita.

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/15/05 12:04 AM

Yup, you are right.

(I thought #2 was the obvious answer, therefor, was wrong). LOL

So did they accept you on the program?

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/15/05 12:11 AM

No, I failed the test!! There were over 70 people there that day, taking the same test, 8 people passed.
Your #1 and # 3 are very interesting, though. I'd love to hear more!

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/15/05 12:17 AM

Wow, what a bummer!

I was in the US Navy for 10 years as an intelligence specialist. It was during that time I was involved in body building. I never did compete - I really didn't have the temperment for it (liking to be on "show").

Loved military life - traded it in for motherhood. Haven't looked back since!

Danita

p.s. come on ladies you've got to play also!

1. I once went hiking in the Pyranees Mountains.
2. I once dated Tony Curtis.
3. I am famous locally for my pie making and have won prizes for my coconut banana cream pie.

I'm going to have to guess that your #2 is made up, Daisy...you're SO much younger than Tony curtis.

1- I had plans to enter a convent
2- I went to Woodstock
3-I went to clown school

Daisey girl- you are not the psycho dater so that's wrong-Tony Curtis-ha!

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/15/05 02:05 AM

Actually I did date Tony Curtis, just not THE OLD Tony Curtis.

The incorrect one is 3. I am famous for my pies (at least with friends and family), but I have never entered a contest and won anything.
Posted by: Daisygirl

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/15/05 02:06 AM

Pattyann, I would say 3 is incorrect. I don't know why, since any could be wrong!

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/15/05 02:08 AM

I'm saying #2 is wrong.
Posted by: Bluebird

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/15/05 02:10 AM

That would be #2 on Pattyann's.

Uh, Daisy, does this mean I don't get any pies?...

Daiseygirl, you are right- I did not go to clown college even tho I can act the fool-I did go to Woodstock though, wbb- was one of those mudkids- and yes, yes, I was going to go to the convent in the 7th grade but that summer at the beach I mega discovered boys and this tomboy went nuts- made my mom mad cause she had already bought and paid for the "approved" convent underwear!

This exercise is really difficult for someone who's written a "tell-all" book...I didn't leave much out, did I! But I'll give it a try.

1) I once threw a gun at a neighbour's kid and cut his head open.
2) I once sang in a choir at a healing service with Billy Graham.
3) I once met Celine Dion coming out of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal.

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/15/05 06:13 AM

Sorry it took me awhile to get back here. Nope. The right wrong answer is #3!

#1 really did happen - when I was five years old! I was a real tomboy back then and used to play "cowboys", and had the complete holster, gun and hat outfit. One day we were playing and I "shot" one of the kids on the other team. But he shot me back. Back then, we played by the honour system, so according to that, he should have been dead first, but refused to co-operate. So I threw my gun at him and hit him in the head and, well, he had to get a few stitches. Mom spanked me and put me to bed for the rest of the afternoon, but I felt wrongly punished..."but Mom, he was supposed to be dead!" Later that evening the kid's mother phoned and said he confessed to not playing by the rules, that it was his fault. I still got punished for using my gun instead of words to settle the dispute!

#2 - our choir's guitarist's name was Billy Graham.

3. I through caution to the wind and went bungie jumping while vacationing with my family.

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/15/05 05:40 PM

I already told you that? Where is my memory?

Wrong. I would NEVER bungie jump. The thought of it makes me sick.

I challenged a girl to a fist fight when I was in elementary school. What a chump. It is something my best neighborhood childhood friend will never let me forget. She's told my kids and anyone else I know. Now I've told you. Funny thing is that I can't recall why...

So, don't mess with me, or I'll have to ask you to put up your dukes. [Eek!] [Wink]

#3 I beat up my first grade boyfriend

yeah- senior moment- now I don't know where I am- so I'll go with the movie star #1- at least I think so but I am a real mess today

Pattyann, maybe you can blame the senior moment on Dotsie...that image of her duking it out with us kind and caring ladies here kind of threw me for a loop...I'm totally bumfuzzled now.

Dianne, I guess #1 too. But do tell all!

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/15/05 11:41 PM

1. I used to break barrell and cutting horses, and compete at these events, and I have a nice assembly of belt buckles I won.

2. I couldn't play football with the boys at recess, because I hurt them.

3. I shot a mountain lion with a 30 06 that attacked our horses two years straight on our ranch.

Junebug, #2 sounds very intriguing...I'm going to guess it's the one that's not true...the other two are connected by the horses.

Danita
Troy Donahue was a blonde cutie that every mom would trust her darling daughter with- he wore suits and played the nice guy- this of course was LOOONGGGG time ago when movie magazines ruled a young girl's heart
Posted by: Dianne

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/16/05 03:47 AM

He was a nice guy but I wouldn't have trusted my daughter with him! [Eek!] He died a couple of years ago. That made me sad because we still kept in touch but mostly for his two kids.

#2 was not true. I did take flying lessons but never got my license. Decided the sky would be a lot safer without me!

Well...yeah. [Wink] We dated for quite a while and believe it or not, I dumped him! His moods drove me nuts but we remained friends until his death. I loved his kids but lost contact with them. His son looks just like he did when he was younger.

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/16/05 08:01 PM

OK, OK, I'll play

I played this game once before at a conference, and no one guessed right! And I pegged Eagle and Dotsie - I'm good, I'm good, I'm good.....

1. I was raised in South Africa and came to this country in 1956.

2. I once talked to Peter Fonda for an hour not knowing who he was.

3. I once did a free fall from 8 stories up into a pool of water.

Dotsie, when I was in high school, a girl came up from behind me and slugged me in the face. She thought I had held her head under water while we were bobbing for apples. I didn't do it but I thought if SHE thought I did, she had a good gripe, so I didn't hit her back.

Wrong, LOL, #3 Is a lie. I never shot a mountain Lion, although I did try. #2 is true. I was a tiny girl, but always got so rough with the boys I hurt them and made them cry when playing football in grade school, so the teachers wouldn't let me play with the boys anymore. A BIG Tomboy. LOL

Searcher, #1's feasible...you would have been 9 in 1956, so one can say they were raised somewhere if they lived there for their first 9 years.

I'm going to say #3 is the lie.
Posted by: Searcher

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/17/05 03:26 AM

OK,
I'm telling.

#1 is the lie. I didn't know I was talking to Peter Fonda until 2 days later. I was working at The Old Saloon in Immigrant, Montana (not just a saloon, but a gathering place for families in this very rural area at the time). He stopped in for a drink and no one else was there at the time, so we just had a conversation (can't remember what about) - but invited me to his Halloween Party 2 days later, and that's when I discovered his true identity! I was mortified!

And yes, I swim, but this was at a water park in Kenosee, Saskatchewan (sp?)Canada and my son dared me to ascend the dreaded FREE FALL. I did this to impress him - and you fall so fast, I think it was 3 seconds from top to bottom, in so much rushing water that ahem....you get an enema near the bottom (no pun intended). I did not go on that thing again.

But I WAS proud of myself and so was my son!

Posted by: Eagle Heart

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/17/05 03:48 AM

Searcher, thanks for the alzeimers comment, but I cheated. I couldn't remember if you were 51 (which would have made #1 the obvious lie) or 58, so searched your first posts to refresh my memory.

I've never knowingly met a celebrity, or even been in close proximity, unless you count the tour at Paramount Studios and seeing the cast of Star Trek Voyageur (sp) outside for a smoke break. That was cool, but fleeting.

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/17/05 05:38 AM

Oh.

And here I thought you had super/brain!

You know, that WAS an interesting time in my life. I lived in Paradise Valley, Montana. Just south of Livingston and just north of the north entrance to Yellowstone. Breathtakingly beautiful. And at that time (1976-77) there were MANY celebs who lived there. I think not only because it was Paradise, but because there was an unspoken rule that said they could come and go with no remark. No one paid them any mind whatsoever. Among them: John Wayne, Phyllis Diller, that Broderick author (can't remember his first name, but I went with my sister, 2 other women, and Ianthe Broderick {his daughter} into town (Bozeman) for our yearly papsmears, then to lunch after! And while all of us were waiting our "turn" we heard this blood curdling scream coming from my sister - the doctor had pinched her with the specula which was broken - can you imagine what WE were thinking? Also, there was Tom McWayne the screenwriter, Robert Redford (whom I never met) but frequented The Old Saloon - Margot Kidder (remember Superman I?), and that supporting actor guy whose name escapes me that was in every western movie ever made - what WAS his name - anyway, I had carrot cake at his house. Which was the very oddest compound of several dwellings, streams running in between with bridges over them - all built to look exactly like old cabins with tiny doors (you had to stoop to enter)and one room built on top of another. He only had wooden ladders to ascend from one floor to the next. But hidden behind old wooden cabinet doors would be all the modern conveniences - tv's, telephones, intercoms, automatic gate shutters. I'm telling you, this was strange. Even "the facilities" were in a different building made to look like an old outhouse. So you had to cross the bridges and wind your way thru' the compound to use them. Very surreal. But REALLY fun! And now I have stories to tell!

As usual, here I am taking up space - sorry - kind of,

I'm going to say #1 is the right wrong one. My niece got stung by a small jellyfish and barely survived to tell about it.

Searcher, I love your description of that house. Sounds like the makings of another good story...it was a dark and stormy night and I had to pee REAL bad...now which one of those bridges led to the right building...wait, that's a nightmare!

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/18/05 07:17 AM

Eagle, I was waiting for the "big reveal" until somebody got it right. And you are! When I was twelve, I did pick up and place several jellyfish on the seat of an outhouse (a story for another time!) but was very fortunate and did not get stung.

And yep, I met Elvis and he signed the shirt I was wearing.
And yep, I delivered a baby (not my own) in the back seat of a car.

OK - here are mine:

1. I had tea at President and Madame Chaing Kai Shek's summer home in Nationalist China.

2. I went on a dog sled ride with a real 'Musher" in the boondocks of Alaska.

3. I was Miss Colorado in 1965.
Posted by: Eagle Heart

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/17/05 08:15 PM

Dreamer, this is a hard one, because I don't know you very well yet. I remember that you moved around a bit when you were young, but I don't recall you ever mentioning China. So I'm going to say that #1 is the right wrong one.

#2 sounds fun. And if #3 is true, you'll have to tell-all!
Posted by: Dianne

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/17/05 08:51 PM

I'm going to guess #2. You gals are very good at making up stories so it's hard to tell what's true and what isn't.

P.S. Regarding Troy's mood swings...I don't care if he was famous, I don't like to deal with never knowing what is going to upset someone. But really, it wasn't just the moodiness. He went to some foreign country to do a film and was supposed to write. He sent three post cards on the same day and I thought it was rude and that was it for me!

1) I once got stuck in an airplane bathroom and they had to take the door off to get me out.

2) I once took 7 exlax before playing in a softball tournament.

3) I once went into a men's bathroom by mistake and saw a man sitting there and said, "I'm hoping that it's YOU that's made a terrible mistake."

JJ, knowing you, they all sound like they could be true. I can picture #1, except for them having to take the door off...and #3 definitely sounds like something the Queen would say. And I seem to remember my Mom taking lots of exlax once. I'm going to guess that #1 is the lie.

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/18/05 02:50 AM

JJ,
#1,
I can't imagine they took the door off, even for you!
Bookie,
#2
Just can't see go-go happening in Utah!

Eagle, my mom swiped the Elvis shirt. She kept it hidden for years--even before she became a dementia patient--so I don't know if I'll ever see it again.

As for the jellyfish, my brothers and I were trying to get back at our great-uncle, who was mean enough to take us out to an island and leave us there all day. (He was fishing offshore.) We noticed that he always went to the outhouse at 9 at night w/ a flashlight, so...

The uncle saw the jellyfish before anything happened, and it was kids who ended up with sore bottoms. We had NO idea how deadly those things could be, but never forgot the lesson after the tanning we all got!

You know, sometimes we think the most obvious and outrageous is the correct choice but I'm here to tell you, there was go go dancing in Utah and I was there. I was trying to subsidize my $.95 hour day job in a department store restaurant.

I had a good friend that was putting herself through college at the University of Utah and she got me the job. I was pretty good and made some pretty good money too, but I only lasted about two weeks. They found out I was under age.

I did marry a man with the same last name because I married the same man twice. (I know, I know!)

I was the youngest of only seven children. Mom and Dad saved the best til last.

Hey you guys (well, gals)

Do know there were 2 outhouses on this page?

OH YEAH --it was Warren Oates with the cabin houses, the dark and stormy night , the peeing and the nightmare. (Eagle, you're funny) Can you imagine what that was like during a Montana winter????

Dotsie - at least Jack Tripper was cute. Warren Oates - not so much. Phyllis Diller either.

Dreamer - Chaing Kai Shek (you sure that's how it's spelled?) did not own a summer house in Nationalist China - it was in Florida. 'member? Actually, I think it would have been pretty hard to get over there then, so I'M guessing that is the lie!

jawjaw - I'm with Eagle on this one. If #2 (no pun intended) is true that must have been one interesting ball game!

Bookie - I'm guesssssing #3 is the lie.

Fifty - What WERE you thinking! Jellyfish? In an outhouse? You know, I've never even seen one of those........

Okay, #1 was the lie. I didn't get stuck in the airplane's bathroom. The other two really happened and in the case of the exlax, ah...well, let's just say I covered first base, 'k?

What about Dreamer?

You all are a HARD act to follow (!!), but I'll give this a whirl too:

1. I was once introduced to the audience at the Kennedy Center by Bob Hope

2. I was once proposed to at the top of the Eiffel Tower

3. I was once asked to pose for Playboy magazine

I just love that jellyfish story and JJ - TOO FUNNY about the exlax (although I imagine it wasn't all that funny at the time right????????).

Gee Pam, these are tough to figure out. I've seen your picture, #3 is a definite possibility. I'm going to guess #2 is the lie.

I'm with Eagle. I'll guess #2 also.

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/18/05 06:54 PM

I'm going out on a limb here and say #3 is not true. NOTTTTTT because you couldn't of been asked, but I happen to know you DID have some fame in the advertising/photo arena but at a much younger age....so, just to be different, I say #3.

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/19/05 07:03 AM

Well congrats Dianne and Eagle.......my fib WAS actually #2!!!

As for #3 and the Playboy thing.....I will probably never know if the guy was for real or just trying a different "pick up" line (haha), but I was approached in a shopping mall MANY YEARS AGO by a guy who had some credentials from Playboy - he said he found LOTS of potential "subjects" while wandering through malls or department stores. Hmm...who knows...at any rate I declined the dubious honor.

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/19/05 12:18 AM

OK! Number 3 is the lie.

I attended my last 2 years of high school in Taiwan. President and Madame Chang Kai Shek did own a home on Yan Min Shan (Grass Mountain) and I did enjoy meeting them and sharing tea at a lawn party at their home when I was a senior in high school.

My Dad (a career Army officer, Corps of Engineers) was stationed in Alaska (Fort Richardson, outside Anchorage) in the late 50's. We were invited to go on a dog sled ride by one of the locals. My mother got on the sled first with her legs out in front of her. I sat in front of her with her legs on either side of me. We still can't figure out how, when the dogs really got going fast, she fell off and I didn't...

And, in case any of you writers are wondering...I do want to write a book about my many past experiences...just can't seem to get started!

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/19/05 01:11 AM

Dreamer....how amazing....I was living on Grass Mountain during my Freshman and Sophomore year of high school - went to Taipei American School. That was 1961/62....my Dad was career Air Force! Talk about a small world huh?

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/19/05 05:45 AM

Wow!

That IS a small world - I find that fascinating!!! And for the two of you to meet on this forum! Well, I'd consider that a sign ----of something.....What a pretty name, Grass Mountain......I'm thinking you military "brats" didn't have it ALL that bad...Anchorage, sled dogs, moms RIDING on sleds, tea with the Sheks! (I guess you WERE spelling it right! Whew! Thank God, you know how I am about this spelling thing - just gives me the sweats if it's not right) I, for one, think you TWO should cooperate on a book, then the "I can't get started issue is not an issue" Right?

Pam, I went to Taipei American School (so did my husband) - have you been to any of the reunions? I attended TAS in 63-64 - lived in Tien Mou...I bet we know each other! Tell me more....

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/19/05 12:55 PM

I've been here so long, it's difficult coming up with any surprises, but I'll try. Which of the following is untrue?

1. When I was in high school, I wanted to be a rabbi.

2. When I was in my twenties, I usually had 3 boyfriends at a time and kept a waiting list.

3. In my thirties, I took flying lessons for 6 months, but never got my license.

Dreamer - I'll send you a PM with details on my "Grass Mountain" experience! I have NEVER met anyone else who was in Taiwan around the same period I was.....wow.

Meredith, I'm going to go against the tide and say #2, although you have implied in other places here that you were somewhat of a radical, so having 3 boyfriends at a time, and a waiting list to boot, would fit. Hmmmm. I'll stick with #2.

Oh Merrrredithhhh, where art thou, sister...you can't just dangle such mysterious clues and then disappear...I could hardly sleep last night wondering what the right wrong answer was...

(just kidding about the sleepless night...I couldn't sleep because I kept wanting to come and see where the October story was going - I had Elvis songs flitting through my dreams all night!)

Meredeth,

You are doing this on Purpose!!!!You have us all in a fever pitch by now and I know you're just laughing!!!!!!Eagle needs her rest, so you must come forward and tell all. Besides that, we can't have her regressing all the way back to ELVIS - that boy is a done deal.....(altho' he did leave quite a legacy..)

By the way Eagle, didn't you LOVE that movie "O Brother Where Art Thou?" Anyone else? MOST entertaining...

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/24/05 08:10 AM

Sorry for the lag time. I had a big craft fair this weekend and got lost preparing for it.

1. TRUE -- On my mother's side of the family, I come from a long line of cantors and rabbis and always thought I'd love to continue in that tradition. However, back in my high school days there was no such thing as a woman rabbi.

2. TRUE -- It always surprised me how many men wanted to be with me, because I'm the antithesis of everything feminine. I'm everything I was told a girl should NOT be, OK? And I kept getting marriage offers, and was really upset about all the guys who wanted to ruin a perfectly good relationship. I fully identified with the bumper sticker "So many men, so little time" but I didn't have a car to put it on.

3. FALSE -- From the first time I flew on a plane at age 12, I was absolutely in love with flying. In my dreams and in my writing, I can fly. However, in my 30s I didn't have the cash to take lessons, although I would've dearly loved to.

Eagle, get some sleep. [Wink]

I would have gladly changed places with you on the flying lessons. I took them to get rid of my fear of flying...didn't work.

What a diverse and obviously, hot woman you are! [Big Grin] [Cool]

Meredith the magnificient! Say now you can't tell me all those men were wrong, not so! You my dear have a mysterious beauty that draws men to you, I've seen it before. I have a t-shirt with that saying on it. Only these days its the other way around, LOL

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/25/05 10:30 AM

Thanks Dianne and Chatty! [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

I have to admit it really took me by surprise in my early 20s, although by my mid-20s I just accepted it. I was really shy once upon a time, and it did take a bit of getting used to. I was raised with that entire litany of "things that girls should do to get a boy interested" that we all were subjected to. Talk about HIS hobbies, etc. etc. I always felt like a fraud being so obviously fake, so I didn't do it. And the guys were probably happy that I wasn't like that! I guess I never bought into the status quo on any front.

Someone once told me that I wasn't particularly pretty, but I was beautiful. I kinda liked that. I think we all need to let our inner beauty shine through, and spend less time trying to look/act like everybody else, or the elusive artificial standard that's no one.

Re: Getting to know YOU! (this is a participant driven fun activity) - 10/25/05 06:45 PM

meredith, your post reminded me of something I had written on my eighth grade notebook. Be yourself...an original is better than a copy. DOn't ask me how I remembered that when I can hardly recall what I had for dinner last night.

Beautiful is more complimentary thatn pretty. Isn't it amazing how you've remembered that after all these years? It's a gentle reminder to me to continue saying kind words to our youth.
