night gardening

night gardening - 07/10/04 02:02 AM

Does anyone else do this? I spent almost 3 hours last night trimming a tree and clean-up AFTER DARK with the front and side porch lights and a 500 watt clip-on lamp. MUCH cooler than trying to do it during the day! [Smile] Even at night I was in shorts and tank top but it was comfortable. Of course I wouldn't operate anything noisy after 10pm but this was all unplugged cutting tools.

I do a lot of night gardening in the summer but I can see how those of you in humid climates might get eaten alive by the bugs. We don't have mosquitos and most of our bugs are the crawly type.

Forgot to add: I DO NOT work around cactus after dark, no matter how good the floods are because they still play tricks with the shadows. Learned this the hard way. [Frown]

I've never thought of it but I might have to try it. Do you have Japanese Beetles in CA? I have declared war on them. I have to spray my roses every other day just to keep them at bay. [Mad]

I'm not sure what Japanese beetles are, so maybe we don't have them. Cockroaches [Mad] and ladybugs [Smile] are our only beetle-family bugs.

My sister seems to be enjoying gardening at night [Razz] . She's actually been working full nights in the garden (at least 3 full nights last week)to keep her mind off the trials she's been going through!

I visited her garden today and it's a darling place [Cool] .

Neat idea! I've done some work at twilight and enjoyed it so much--cooler, neighbors are in a good mood, the work goes easier and there's something about working in the garden as the day comes to an end.

Maybe this sounds goofy, but sometimes working at night or twilight, feel like praying...

No, Toni: It's not goofy at all! What better way to start or end your day than talking with the Lord? Amen to that!!

Songbird,

Again, you're right on target! In the morning, in the evening--no matter the time, it's always good to give praise and glory!

I don't do gardening at night when it's dark, but I do garden just until dark. We have too many bugs at night.

I especially enjoy gardening early in the morning. The town is still at rest while I'm piddling in the soil, enjoying the peace and beauty of the earth.

I and quite a few of my neighbors are out at dusk and dark fussing with our plants etc. We are under strict drought rules right now and are not allowed to water until after 7:00 PM. No bugs to speak of here in Nevada except the Black Widows come out at night so if you're messing around bushes or thick plants near the house you need to be very cautious....Me, I just water from a distance. [Eek!]

They haven't imposed drought restrictions here yet this summer, but I'm expecting it since we hardly got any rain this winter.
