How often do you clean your closets? I'm finding outfits I forgot I had! LOL... And I try to revamp them every year!
Oh, well...

Ha ha. I thought you were going to ask how often do you have sex.

I clean clothes closets about once a year;(if they get lucky), kitchen cabinets about twice a year. and closets in the celler...eeeee gads...never.

Re: How often...? - 12/02/07 01:36 AM

My dressing room is completely under control! Everything has a place and everything is in it's place. Things go out to be drycleaned as soon as they need it and are back as soon as they are done. The laundry is kept up and every outfit I have I am aware of and why I have it.

Years of performing taught me to have it all together so that I can be together at the last min.

When I was young and rooming with a model, we must have changed clothes at least 3 times a day. Most of the time, it was four changes! We wore the same size so it was clothing all over the floors, sinks, couches, chairs, everywhere! We had an ironing board permanently set up in case we needed to press a dress or suit from the floor or the corner of the closet! It was clothing mayhem!

Since then I have grown up and take better care of things. Twice a year I bundle up what I won't wear and send it off to be sold on ebay for me for whatever it brings. I keep costumes that are special to me for whatever reason but not many...

Re: How often...? - 12/02/07 01:40 AM

I was looking at my clothes closet this morning, thinking I should clean it out. Instead I just turned off the light.

I have always lived in older homes with extrememly small closets. I like to buy clothes, so I have to get rid of clothes. My rule has always been, buy something, get rid of something.

So did I..think that the question would be how often do you have sex ...ok, closets..no special time span here..depends on me feeling the need to do it or above all, needing the space. It isn´t easy to throw out stuff tho..I mean just think if I "need" it a year from now or 3 years from now?? And that shapeless, washed out sweater..it´s sooo comfy on a rainy day at home!!! I actually have a sweater that is over 20 yrs old and I wear it to work at least 1 a week when I need to feel that I am taking my cozy home with me...and it really works. People usually tell me that I look like I have lost weight when I wear it. Just goes to show you..if you feel good with what you´ve got..it´ll communicate itself to others

Guess that fooled ya... - 12/02/07 03:23 PM

You ladies that thought I'd ask about your sex lives...?
Come on! I try to clean the closets every 6 months, but I guess I don't. It's more like once a year. I give what I never use or doesn't fit, to the Good Will and write it off the taxes. You know how that goes! The thing is, I don't like the job. I try to straighten out the kitchen cabinets twice a year, if I force myself. That poor cellar
seldom gets a good cleaning. Oh, well. There's only so many hours in the day. And of course I have to come here and chat instead of get to work!
Ciao for now

Re: Guess that fooled ya... - 12/02/07 03:28 PM

Sex never entered my mind. Instead, I mentally went to the closet across the hall here from my office that is in need of a good cleaning out. Oh my...does it ever. And it was about six months ago that I cleaned it out. Geeish....

I donated a load for taxes, and never thought of the Ebay thing.

You know Dancer, I bet Mommies would pay to have your costumes for their daughters to play dress up...or parts of a costume....I know my grandchildren LOVE to play dress up with hats, boas, shawls, etc....

Re: Guess that fooled ya... - 12/02/07 06:00 PM

Good answer Gimster!!

We give our closets a good clean-out every year when we go south for our annual winter getaway. We bring clothes (and shoes, jewellery, purses, etc) that just barely fit us or we don't use anymore (or bought on sale throughout the year), wear them while down there, then give them away before we come home. It works well, since it's a very poor country and the people can use whatever we bring - if they can't use it themselves, they either pass it along to someone who can, or they alter it to make something else, like clothes for their children, curtains, bags, whatever they need.

When Mom died, we brought a lot of her beautiful clothes (some of them hadn't even been worn!) down the following trip - there were many happy smiles that year!

The last time we were there, we brought a lot of children's clothes. And since we didn't make it there last year, we haven't cleaned out our closets in two years, so we'll have quite a lot of stuff to take down with us this next visit.

And whatever heavier stuff we can't lug in our suitcases, we box up for the local charity truck that comes by every month.

Re: Guess that fooled ya... - 12/05/07 06:39 AM

I spend a lot of time finding very unique clothing and keep it almost forever. I take very good care of my clothes. I have sweaters still in great condition after 40 years. By the time I'm ready to get rid of something, it's too ratty for anyone else to want it. I have 2 large closets for clothing, all arranged by style and color, and I can find anything in there in a snap.

I have a third large personal closet which is only semi-organized. Plus all the smaller and family closets. I clean them every 15 years when it's time to paint.

Seasons & color... - 12/05/07 02:14 PM

Ms. M,
I arrange clothing by color, too. First, I put them together by the season worn, then by color sections.
If I don't use something, I donate it. Last night, I finished cleaning the upstairs closets and dressers, chest and vanity. Now the downstairs needs a good going over.
Problem is, I don't like housecleaning. Wish I did. LOL

Re: Seasons & color... - 12/05/07 02:35 PM

My problem with clothes is that for several years now I've had no sense of what suits me anymore. That combined with no income and wildly fluctuating weight gains/losses (more gains than losses), well, I just started buying cheap clothes that, well, looked cheap. Hubby got so disgusted with my choices that he upped my allowance (the government actually designates part of his pension for me, for putting up with his deafness - which is nice, but it means I can't complain about him not hearing me anymore!)

Anyway, I don't enjoy shopping for clothes for myself anymore (but I love shopping for my granddaughter!), so I only buy classic-style, STRETCHY clothes...hoping they'll take me all the way through to the nursing home years!

But now I have to clean out the closets and get rid of the really old favourite stuff that no longer fits - and new stuff I should never have bought in the first place.

Eagle Heart,
Where to you live? What is the closest decent size city? I will find you a nice little shop where you can find come clothing that makes you feel beautiful as you are!
dancer9, all about beauty.

Re: Seasons & color... - 12/05/07 06:14 PM

Bonnierose,
Separating by season is a wonderful thing to do. Also, putting your clothing in order according to color, and pants with pants, shirts with shirts, dresses with dresses, and after that, put the lightest frock in the front of the heaviest fabric. This makes dressing the easiest!

Re: Seasons & color... - 12/06/07 12:06 AM

Bonnierose, I hear you! I don´t like housecleaning at all. Would much rather read a good book or maybe be here reading..it´s a necessary evil..housekeeping, I think!

Eagleheart..oooo, I getcha! Don´t like shopping for myself either anymore. And when I do, I find I have been dreaming..opitimistically..when I get to the fitting room and look in the mirror..I don´t look at all as I imagined I would or do in general. Very hard to find something that I think really looks and feels good. And I DO believe that we "are worth it". I just don´t know where to find it.

Dancer if you have any tips to give me near the Stockholm area..let me know.

Hugs!

Re: Seasons & color... - 12/06/07 12:11 AM

Humlan, and EagleHeart,
If I were in your shoes I would go to:
http://www.tendertreasures.com/catalog/flax_clothing.html?gclid=CI7Up4qzkpACFSBeagodXFtu-g
and look for clothing.
or
http://www.chicos.com/store/home.asp
I would recommend these for ANY Boomer who wants to dress comfy and does not have to wear a suit, (and who does not want to spend a lot of money.)
There you can find flowing tunics, pants with elastic waists that are stylish, tops of every type and pants of every type as well! They are always "in," the companies have sales ALL the time, and they have choices galore!
( You'd think I shop there but I don't!)
I wore some of these when I was recovering from surgery and I was SO comfortable and could buy a new wardrobe for recovery without investing a lot of money! I normally wear dresses and such but these clothes were PERFECT when I was going to doctors a lot and when I had to lie down at times but still needed to go out and look good. They wash well, dry normally, and look great!

Try them, for those of you who can wear these things and do not have to wear a suit to work! It's a great look that you can keep up easily! Just find your size and order away! These stores are all over the country and are REALLY popular with Boomers! They have proven themselves over and over as a medium priced store that sell comfy clothing that looks nice and won't break the bank!

Mmmm, what a gorgeous site, Dancer! I've bookmarked it for further perusal! Beautiful stuff. I can't order anything online right now, but will definitely have a good look at everything for my next online shopping spree, maybe in January!

Thanks for that link, and for taking the time to find it for us.

Re: Seasons & color... - 12/09/07 12:58 AM

We have a Chicos within walking distance.

I clena out my closet twice a year. In the spring, I put away all winter stuff in the attic and drag the spring/summer stuff down and vice versa with the other seasons. We live in an old house and the closets are teeny tiny. I have friends with walk in closets to die for. I would love to be that organized and able to spread out.
I also organize the hanging clothes by color, light to dark. It's something that helps a wee bit in a small closet.

Re: Seasons & color... - 12/09/07 11:07 PM

Thanks dancer..will give your tips a try..after Christmas probably..my finances are limping..at the moment..more like keeling over.. I also went crazy when the tunic style got going here again and bought myself a few. I love them with shorter skirts and tights. No, I don´t have the lovely Scandinavian legs..but so what. I like how I look anyway. And it´s so comfy. The kids think it´s fun that I wear tights like they do!!!!

Thanks for your help!!!

Re: Seasons & color... - 12/16/07 02:38 AM

I have NEVER considered organizing my clothes by colour. Right now it's a serious problem of space. Of course, my partner complains...

I did do some serious clothes weeding about 6 yrs. ago when I relocated to another region in Canada. And truly I haven't much since then. Actually most of the clothes in last few years have been:

*lycra based, solid coloured bright tops -- to wear casual or under a dress jacket. In various styles Long or mid sleeved for cooler and sleeveless for summer.

*T-shirts --admittedly have acquired several
*cycling wear --
*4 pairs of shoes and boots
*2 fleecy jackets for sports activities/casual
*1 dress coat --that I love and everyone else seems too also.

Pretty modest compared to many other women.

Like meredith, I do choose classic lines with interesting fabrics or cuts....so I do make certain clothing last for over 10-20 years. It's a standing joke with my partner.

Re: Seasons & color... - 12/16/07 06:36 PM

I understand this, Orchid.Like most models and dancers, at my age, I know what works on me and can pick my size off the rack. I have a stuctured way of dressing based on years of wearing clothing. Don't let my modeling photos fool you, I do not change clothing like that every day!
I have my "basics," those things I buy all the time and in bulk, and I have my "uniform," which consists of the sytle of clothing that works on my body the best and is easy to wear everyday.
I do not change that formula unless it is time for me to dress for a different time in my life, and even then, it stays close to the same since I was about 9!
My mother was a painter until she became ill and sold every painting she did. She "designed," me based upon what she thought looked best on me and what hair style worked best on me.
The funny thing is that after all my experience in fashion and clothing and all that I tried, I returned to see that she was, in essence, right! I dress that way to this day and my hair, although it changes a bit here and there, stays the way she chose to have it cut when I was a child!
Very strange, no?
