Do you do any volunteering?

Do you do any volunteering? - 02/11/06 06:24 AM

Hi ladies --
Back around Xmas time I did some serious reflecting and realized I wanted to do more with my time that what I had been doing for the past several years. I enjoy my free time (am unemployed and have been since I got married 15 years ago.......husband is retired military) but felt like I wanted to meet some new people and get out and try some new things. Signed up with the local community college -- they offer several non-credit community education programs and were looking for someone to sit in on basic computer classes for seniors as an assistant to the instructor, so that's what I've been doing one day per week for the past several weeks -- and I love it!! And I've learned a few things too, which is kinda neat, since as a volunteer I didn't have to pay for the class! The class only has 2 more sessions and I don't know if they'll ask me to come back for the next session, but I hope so. I also signed up with a local group called RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) and they just called me back this week.........I have an appt with our local Meals on Wheels program next week, they need someone to help with data entry. Don't know how that will go until I meet with them next week but I'm thinking I'd be willing to give them one day per week.
I'm just wondering if anyone else out there volunteers in their community and what they're doing as a volunteer? I'm betting some of us gals do some interesting stuff!
I've helped out for years at Paralzyed Veterans of America bass-fishing tournaments but I was ready to move onto something new & different!

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 02/12/06 03:11 AM

crosstitchqueen, I volunteered my life away when I was a SAHM. I had a tremendous desire to be involved with most activities my children were involved with.

I was a homeroom mom, lunch room mom, youth advisor, Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher. I taught parenting classes, started a prayer group for moms, sold hot dogs for the rec council, hosted parties, raised money for teams, schools, church, you name it. I served on the board of our neighborhood association. I chaired the Baltimore Skate Solutions Committee which convinced government officials to provide our youth with three skate parks in our county. The list goes on ad nauseum.

When Mom became ill and was given 6 months to live, I dropped all things volunteer to care for Mom with my Dad and siblings. I'll never regret it.

Since, I am very careful about how I spend my free time. I realized that everything I had done in the past was typically tied to my kids. Now I only volunteer doing what really appeals to me. Maybe I burned out.

So, to make a short story long...the only volunteer work I do now is short term activities for church and my daughter's school. I can't beleive it, but that's all I do.

I am a confirmation sponsor for a ninth grade gal at church and that's about it. My husband is also a confirmand sponsor, plus he visits a young boy at a local orphanage weekly, without fail!

I intend to get invloved with teens at church in my empty nest.

Great topic.

Like Dotsie, I volunteered for everything when my kids were in school. After a while, I said, "Enough already." By the time they left for college, I was delighted to give all that up. It was someone else's turn.

The only thing I kept on doing was helping run an academic competition at the state level, organizing all the volunteers to run the meets. That ended when I got cancer. They had to find someone to take over my job, and I was delighted to let him keep it.

Since then, I've worked in various charitable organizations. I backed away from all of those when my I had to take care of my sick husband last year. Recently I started volunteering at my local hospital one day a week, and I love it.

I work at my church library twice a month, for 4 1/2 hours each time. it is rare that anyone comes in to check out a book, but I get to have some quiet reading time away from my house!
I have joined the Guadalupana Society, which provides food and sets up and cleans up for parish funerals. I've done one so far. It's great working with all those ladies in the kitchen.
I helped out at my kindergartener's school a couple of times this year, but then women's Bible fellowship started.
I will be drving a woman from our church to her kidney dialysis one friday a month (she goes 3 times a week and there's a group of people who take turns). Her treatment is an hour from here and it takes hours. I will incorporate my monthly trip to Walmart and do some other errands in that town.
I spent many years as a crisis pregnancy counselor in the mid 80's to mid 90's.

I am a foster care giver for animals that have been abused, thrown away or are old or crippled, blind whatever....

I also do some cooking and party planning and socializing with the residents in a local nursing home....

I collect items and raise money for a local womens shelter...

I am on the new member drive at church and am a leader on the prayer circle....

Sometimes I just slump in a chair and breathe...

Oh, this is fun reading abouat other aspects of our lives.

Chatty, slump, breathe in, breathe out. You have to do that every now and then! Remember to volunteer for yourself!

Bluebird, I'd love to hear mroe about that crisis pregnancy center...

Jackie, my daughter and I are attending a volunteer meeting at our local hospital next week. She wants to volunteer in the neonatal unit. Just like Dianne's daughter! What are you doing at the hospital?

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 02/13/06 09:50 PM

In my past I've volunteered at a homeless shelter, cooking and serving meals, was an usher at the local theatre, sunday school assistant several years, helped on several Emmaus teams (Christian organ.), worked at a women's crisis pregnancy organ., Stephan's Ministry, and have had a couple of Bible study groups at my house. Of course when my son was growing up, I did all the typical volunteer work such as work in concession stands, organize dances, teacher assistant, etc.

Now, I would like to do something else. I tried fostering a dog, but I travel so much for my job, it just wasn't practical. Since I live alone, I don't have anyone to help when I'm gone. I think that's the thing I would most like to do. I'm sure something will come up, especially since I just put it in writing. God doesn't miss a thing.

Dotsia,

I work once a week in the waiting room for the families/friends of surgical patients. I take them to be with their "patient" in pre-op and post-op, give lots of direction to the bathroom and the coffee shop and answer any other questions I can. I'm on my feet from the time I get there until I leave, but I love what I do! I wish there had been someone like me at the hospital in Boston where Chuck had surgery last year. I felt like I'd been stranded on a desert island.

Jackie, I can tell by your post how much you like it.

I know exactly what you do. I've met you over and over again in our local hospital. I've been in that outpatient area too many times with Mom, Dad, my sister, and me. Lots of little outpatient surgeries. Those women are very comforting. I like the cookies they serve with the coffee.

Daisy, soemthing will be revealed as soon as you pray about it. Maybe this post will cause you to take the next step.

You were a Stephen Minister? We had them at our church years ago. There's talk of beginning the ministry again.

What a great ministry. You had to go through lots of training for that, didn't you? What was you ministry specialty?

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 02/15/06 08:22 AM

Hi all! I lead a women's bible study. I am president of the women's minsitry at the church. I do the artwork and newsletters for Habitat for Humanity. I do grantwriting for non-profits. Basically if I see a need or if someone asks for my help I try to give it.

My big secret dream.....to make enough money that when I hear that someone doesn't have enough to pay their electric bill to anonymously go and pay it. Or to fund a project, or put a needy child through college. I want to make an impact in people's lives, but I don't what anyone to know its me doing it.

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 02/14/06 09:52 PM

Starting Over, what a wonderful dream you have. I have friends who are wealthy enough to do just the sort of thing you talk about. I know, but very few others do. When I tell them how wonderful they are, they just smile and say, "It's what we do."

We are blessed to have people like you in the world.

Dotsie, it occurred to me on Friday that we don't have even a coffee pot in our shiny new waiting room. The people either use the vending machines or go to the coffee shop. I'm wondering if I can change that! Maybe I'll call the director of volunteers and see if we can do something about it, at least on Fridays.

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 02/15/06 12:35 AM

It takes about 1 year of training for the Stephen's Ministry, then soon after I finished, my church dropped it. I only counseled 1 person and she had problems that were beyond my scope and they took me off the case. But I have used the training many times when I've had a friend in distress.

The most important thing I learned is to speak the truth in love. I'm not always successful, though.

I actually did that once! What a blessing for both parties! Since I did not know the family's account number, I was there when the clerk called the house and the woman (an acquaintance of mine) just could not believe it and cried. The clerk never did tell who paid both the electric and gas bill.

She still does not know to this day,but our Lord does!

I volunteer on our county Home Extension Club council as VP in charge of programs for the entire county. It's so much fun coordinating and planning these programs each year. I've done it two years in a row and have enjoyed it so much!

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 02/15/06 06:31 PM

Di, what programs do you plan? I'm not familiar with a home extension club.

Daisy, so we're not the only church who dropped the ministry?

You will carry that training with you forever, I'm sure!

starting over, I like your dream. It's admirable, even though I'm sure you don't want the admiration...

My church is huge, 3000 regular attendees. We have our own counseling center and the care ministry is run through that. I chose not to do it because it was going to be mostly phone calls and I am better at one on one.

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 03/02/06 05:40 AM

I was asked to volunteer in the Church's restaurant but there just is no time left in my life for that right now. I felt so guilty about saying no but I would rather do fewer jobs well, than too jobs half hazardly....Why is saying no so difficult?

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 03/03/06 08:19 AM

Di - I love doing "anonymous" things like that - the payout is so much better when the person on the receiving end does not know. ::winks::

I enjoy what I do...right now I volunteer w/ Project Connect - a non-profit service of our church that helps repair and fix-up residences of low income families. I also do lots of volunteer work through my daughter's school - last project I have taken on is to design one of their reading/quiz competitions - I also teach journalism/creative writing as a mini-course to our church's elementary/middle school kids. That is a blast! And I teach 2's & 3's sunday school - which is fun b/c I have my son, Andrew in there.

I have found that when I give of myself and my time without expectation that those moments are some of the most influencing and impacting moments of my life. The people I meet when I am doing random acts of kindness or "anonymous" stuff are floored that a stranger even cares - that is so sad, yet so motivating to do MORE so that more people realize that there are people out there that really do value the individual...no matter what.

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 03/05/06 02:13 AM

Volunteering is something the retired people do in our county. I always say we run the world while the rest of them work.
Church Vestry liason to Sunday school
Bazaar chair Christmas bazaar
Scrapbook Hope to gather members to help put our scrapbook together
Hospice Scrapbook-take pictures at functions and gather materials to put in it.
Faith in Action I take a lady shopping one day a week. We have grown close and look forward to our day.
Their are people here who work and volunteer too.
Reading over these posts its amazing what boomerwomen do isn't it?

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 03/05/06 04:45 AM

The year I was married, a community action type group was just starting a women's chapter in our rural community. I joined, and spent about 10 years volunteering with this group. We did projects that benefitted everyone from babies with well-baby clinics, to youth with bussing to swim lessons and babysitting clinics to seniors, helping to raise money for their own building. It was really a busy time. It was a real blessing for me because I had just married and moved here from another state so this was how I found many friends and a close-knit group of women my own age. We are all still very close friends.

I also am a church organist and vocalist so was doing that full time along with directing a small choir and providing a children's music program in Sunday School. I continue to be on work group for funerals in two churches.

When my daughter died in 1994, everything came to a stop and I spent until 2001 when my youngest graduated from HS, just doing whatever I could to help my boys survive the loss and get through school. Then it was my turn to grieve and I'm still at it.

I've gone back to playing the organ one Sunday a month and funerals, am on funeral work groups and just help out with what I can where I can without long term commitments.

I started going to The Compassionate Friends, a self-help group for bereaved parents about a year after Missi died. Now I continue with the organization as newsletter editor and chapter leader. I now consider that my ministry. I figure I did my thing for the rest of the community during those early years.

I'm also our township clerk - with a salary of $140/year, I consider that volunteer, too!

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 03/05/06 10:14 PM

I volunteered a lot in Canada. So much that I was Citizen of the Year, one year. I loved all I did. It included WISE (Women in successful employment) Women's Shelter, Motivational Speaker on women's issues. Ambulance, Heritage, Town Councillor, Recreation Director, Events Co-ordinator and Student Job services. I volunteer wrote proposals to the Provincial and Federal Governments and was never refused funding...I believed in networking before it was a common word.
These days, I continue to find people. I found someone last week. I reunited a man and his daughter a year ago. I usually do it when the occassion arises. If I am in conversation with new people and mention why I am in the USA(found my Dad) it brings up that there's someone on their missing list.
Saying NO is difficult for most volunteer minded people. There were nights when I attended 2 functions/ meetings back to back.
I firmly believe in volunteer-ring. I got burnt out and moved away from it after my Mom passed. When I am settled in Tennessee, I will be doing it again - in full force.
Thanks for the topic. It was fun. My best to all who volunteer their time to worthy causes.

Re: Do you do any volunteering? - 03/06/06 06:22 PM

chick,interesting...I gave up the majority of volunteering when my mom got sick and died. I decided I wanted to use all my free time to help care for her.

Then when she died, I had a huge void because I was no longer caring for her, or volunteering, The kids were growing up and didn't need me as much, and the empty nest was staring me in the face.

That's when boomerwomenspeak was launched. I hunkered down in prayer while I was in the valley.
