Addicted to the Internet

Addicted to the Internet - 06/24/07 12:56 AM

I saw on TV how many of our young people are spending days at a time on the internet and/or playing games.

I am curious as to how much time Boomers spend online. I can already vouch for myself that I spend Wayyyy to much time on here.

I am thinking about shutting down for a whole week, just to see what else I can do.

What say you? I know many of you work using the internet. What about when you're not working?

Maybe a book needs to be written? Of course I'd have to stay on here and research that.....tee hee.

Re: Addicted to the Internet - 06/24/07 04:59 AM

I do come home after work and surf 3-4 sites, including this one. It's about a hr. --including checking my emails..which isn't much, some of it is related to work (notices from professional associations) and check my finances.

But not much more time. Other times, I am on the bike...another addiction.

If the Internet is an addiction, then make sure you have a 2nd addiction/passion that takes you completely away from the computer and somewhere else.

Re: Addicted to the Internet - 06/24/07 06:05 PM

My name is Hannelore and I'm a BWS addict.

Chick, if you want to stay away a week, then I'm with you on this. NO sneak peeking! The computer is turned on only for business sake…no chatting, surfing, or game playing.

Why is hubby looking at me like that? Is it because I 'm embracing my flat screen with my arms and legs? Jeez, this ain't easy…where's a big old lumpy computer screen when you need it?

Can we do this cold turkey Chick? Want to set a date? 2050? Give me a five!

Re: Addicted to the Internet - 06/25/07 01:25 PM

Wait a minute, wait JUST a minute - this is a GOOOOOOOD addiction! BWS is the best thing to happen to me since, well, since forever! Hey, I might not even be alive if it weren't for BWS - isn't it better to be alive and addicted to BWS than to, well, not be?

Seriously, when I first joined here, this was my ONE and only lifeline to the outside world. And during those months of severe anxiety when I couldn't even step outside my door, you were all here for me, cheering me on...without YOUR and MY addiction to BWS, where would I be???? Huh????

So PLEASE DON'T GO AWAY! You're all providing a VERY IMPORTANT safe place here by being "addicted" to this place. I think we all benefit from this particular "addiction" (which I still don't think is the correct terminology - I think it's no mistake that we're all here!) And don't we all encourage each other to get out once in awhile, like to go buy a new pair of shoes, or a new book for the book club, or try a new recipe, or go pray for someone for awhile? It's all good, isn't it???

Okay, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I think that BWS is the best thing to happen to the Internet since, well, since forever. So I ain't leaving anytime soon. I'm here to stay. Except when I have to go out to buy a new bag of chips...

Re: Addicted to the Internet - 06/25/07 02:29 PM

I'm with you, Eagle. I just found this site a few months back and the wonderful boomers who post here have helped me so much.

I don't feel as alone in my battle with anxiety/depression. I've gotten great advice, learned that others have had or have the same challenge, and have been "drawn" out of myself when I learn about others challenges.

And I have laughed! Boy have I laughed. I've also been inspired to do things like organize my house and read good, non-fiction books!

Love you all,
Emily

Don't worry! If chick does decide to sign-off for a week, the rest of us will be here. We won't all jump ship at once.

I just wonder what she'll do all week. I bet she'll have the cleanest house in Oklahoma, put all her photos into scrapbooks, and? That's if she doesn't go into withdrawals by noon today and sign back in!

Ok I'm back, but only because I want you all to remember TVC's Birthday on Friday or anyone elses that pops up.I just remembered and had to come back and do a reminder. I'm gone again, lol.

Yes, I agree BWS is the best on the net, but I spend other time playing games, researching, etc. I just need a week to see what else I can be doing.

Love y'all

Re: Addicted to the PORN on Internet - 07/01/07 01:36 AM

I have concerns that my SO is addicted to porn on the Internet. After some investigating on my part, I have found out that he has a Playgirl on-line account. I realize that in itself is no big deal, but he lies about it. He won't admit that he prefers the pleasure of his own handiwork rather than sharing with me. He is full of rationalizations and excuses about not having intimacy, and this has been an ongoing issue between us for several years. I have been patient, naively listening to his screwed up philosophies.... But, now I am done with him. I am an attractive, intelligent woman, with men always interested in me. I moved out of the bedroom in April, and have told him we are merely room mates. Now, if I can get him to MOVE OUT of this house! It is complicated. The saga continues.....

Re: Addicted to the PORN on Internet - 07/01/07 05:36 PM

medtype, I wouldn't spend another minute with a man like that...and if I were the one that had to move out! Sorry...I just think there isn't anything quite as demeaning to a willing woman, as something like that. It's not only a slap in the face, it's egotistical, disgusting and plain sick.

I wish you strength in getting your self-esteem back. No one deserves that kind of treatment.

Re: Addicted to the PORN on Internet - 07/01/07 09:15 PM

Medtype1,
This is the same story we have heard so often here and my own sister suffered the same kind of insulting, degrading behavior from her ex, before he was her ex. I know from experience its sometimes very hard for many different reasons BUT kick that slime ball to the curb as soon as you can, and don't waste another minute on him. Find someone thats worthy of you.

Re: Addicted to the PORN on Internet - 07/02/07 10:34 PM

Also, just pray he isn't involved with child porn. Someone can show up at the door, confiscate the computer and him. It happened to another woman who frequented our site.

Re: Addicted to the PORN on Internet - 07/03/07 02:07 PM

Medtype1,
I feel your pain. They don't always see it as cheating because it is with a picture. There are websites (at least there used to be) for this addiction. It is no different than alcohol or drug abuse. He needs help. They are not necessarily involved with children, just pictures of naked women.

He can change and get help, but he has to want to change.

"Out" him to Dr. Phil! LOL!

Re: Addicted to the PORN on Internet - 07/03/07 09:46 PM

medtype1 Dotsie is refering to me. It's true, hubby of 24 yrs found the computer to be a better partner than me. When the police raided the house they found the "largest collection of child porn ever discovered". didn't think to ask if that was in the county, state, or US (the feds were involved) Later he admitted to being gay too (hence lack of interest in me) I advise doing a LOT more checking, let him go and don't look back!

I wish I'd spoke up, rocked the boat, had the guts to leave on my own rather than hoping things would change and having to deal with my whole world collapsing. If the marriage isn't working end it.

ah, glad to see you saw this post. Thanks for stopping by.

By the way, I need another set of the hand stuff from Mary Kay. Can you hook me up and send me a bill? Thanks.

Ladies, starting over is a very conscientious Mary Kay rep if you need one. It's so much fun getting little packages in the mail with good stuff in them!

Re: Addicted to the PORN on Internet - 07/06/07 04:10 AM

Ladies, I thank you all for responding to my post. I have gone through so many emotions the past several years regarding this man. After doing some spying of my own with a handy little portable video surveillance camera, I do know that he is not looking at anything as sick and perverted as children or beastiality. While I am ashamed to admit that I stooped such a low act such as monitoring the t.v., (I just had to ease my mind so I planted this device in a flower arrangement next to his favorite leather chair, aimed it at the television, then hooked the remote receiver to a t.v. in the basement so I could see what channel he was watching) Desperate? Perhaps, but I had to know what the Hell he was viewing, what could possibly be more satisfying that the REAL thing? Well, it was simply just basic porn. I got so angry I graciously added a half dozen Adult Channels to the monthly cable bill (which HE was paying for with automatic bill pay on his credit card). He did not realize he even had these channels, nor was he aware he was paying an additional $60 per month until 6 months or so later, when he actually looked at his cable bill. HA! He is a tightass too, so I know this really pissed him off. But, the funny thing is he could not ASK ME about the charges, as he never would admit to watching porn. HEHEHEHE.

Well, if I am...Re: Addicted to the Internet - 07/08/07 01:43 PM

I may be addicted. But it's a good addiction. I spend less than an hour on the Net because I am writing a book and don't have time to do otherwise. Boomer Women Speak and one other site are all I visit on a regular basis. This site is my very favorite! Some of you folks are a hoot!!!
Ciao for now,

Well, if I am...Re: Addicted to the Internet - 07/23/07 08:58 PM

re: addicted to porn
What do I advise my mother to do? Both her and my Dad are in their 80's and have not had sex since their 40's. What is a man to do if he doesn't have intimacy, is in a wheel chair and looks at porn out of curiosity, or because he can because of the Internet?

You would think at 80 there would be no interest but they are only 80 in mind, not body. I have advised my Mom to just ignore it as they are not intimate anyway. She has tried to catch him, sneaks up on him, checks what channel he was watching when he leaves the room.

My Mom is disgusted that my Dad is looking at this stuff. I don't really want to know about it either. Should I talk to him about it? He knows I know because my Mom has mentioned it in front of him. When she catches him she calls him a dirty old man and then won't talk to him for days.

I understand her being upset but he is not going to stop it so her nagging and name calling are getting her no where except stressed out. At this point they are not going to get divorced.
Any ideas?

Well, if I am...Re: Addicted to the Internet - 07/24/07 10:49 AM

At their stage of life if all hes doing is looking, leave him alone...I had several old men (past 75) clients doing the phone sex thing and they were spending a lot of money not only calling me, but other girls on the service as well.
Video porn to the best of my limited knowledge is free. Just my two cents.

Re: Addicted to the Internet - 07/24/07 01:11 PM

Aw Chick, a week off won't cure you! You have the disease and it's here to stay.

My sweetie keeps his computer in the basement. If that was our only computer, my addiction would be cured in a minute. I have my laptop and drag it where ever I feel like sitting. I turn it off and on and when I am needing to relax or take a break from cleaning or cooking or gardening, I spend a while here.

I have some great online friendships. I met my dear Dennis online and he is the best thing that's happened to me in years and years. My celebration partner, well, we have met in person, but we have gotten to know each other by writing our daily celebrations. We have become friends. I met great friends here, and adopted a beautiful grandson by playing on the computer.

No, please don't take my computer away. You can have my house, my car, my life insurance. But not my computer, please!!!!

Re: Addicted to the Internet - 07/24/07 09:32 PM

Besides using it for work, my laptop is my lifeline to the outside in more ways that one. Most of my dearest friends I met thru the computer, and in person thereafter. I agree with Anno, take my blood but leave my computer alone please...

Forget about it...Re: Addicted to the Internet - 07/25/07 01:26 PM

Kate,
Hey at age 80, let 'em B! They're not hurting anybody.
If the man's in a wheel chair, he certainly isn't going to go out and molest anybody. Life's short. Let your mom deal with daddy in her own way!
And that's my 2 cents!
Ciao!
