How did everyone celebrate New Year's Eve? - 01/01/05 06:27 AM

What is everyone doing for New Year's Eve?

It's a tame one here. Our kids and friends are at a big celebration downtown. We're home watching the downtown party and Regis on TV, me with one leg sticking up in the air and Dan making dinner.

We'll have champagne, candle light, and some poppers left over from last year's New Years eve at midnight. Weirdly wonderful I hope.

Here's hoping everyone has a great New Year's Eve and an even greater 2005.

We thought we'd have a nice dinner at home, but all that changed. We ended up going out early for dinner and a walk through Hamden with a couple family members.

Hamden is an old neighborhood in the city. One whole block of row homes decorates like crazy people. They even have lights strung from one side of the street to the other. It's magical. People come from all over the state to see the display. Each home has a theme. Some seemed to have many themes...a little bit of everything thrown in! [Eek!]

We had dinner at Cafe Hon and then walked to see the lights. We were home by 8:30. We played cards and hung out with two of our children and a couple of their friends. We made it to midnight! [Wink] Yippee! Happy New Year!

New Years Eve brought a marathon of Cops on TV which I watched until 11:30 PM then switched to local channel 8 to see the madhouse on the strip. At midnight all the hotels set off their fireworks displays and it was a sight to behold. It seems the crowds were a bit more subdoed this year with people interviewed from all over the world wishing all of us Peace, Health and Tranquility. The Tsunami was mentioned many times and I fear people were very shaken by such a disaster. It did my heart good to see their concern even in this party hardy atmosphere. Maybe 2005 will be a better more caring year... [Wink]

I made a big pot of vegetable soup from scratch, which was our dinner. We rented 3 movies. Last night we saw Harry Potter 3; today was Shawn of the Dead; and in 30 minutes it'll be Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. We taped Die Fleidermouse off TV and will watch it tonight.

We spent quiet time at home. Watched some Tv and caught up on things around the house.
We do like to play games in the evenings.

I'm still scrapping the drool off the side of my mouth where I fell asleep on my couch around ohhhh say 9ish...what? Hey I had Chinese, a good movie, then peanut butter fudge...now THAT's my kind of evening.

I dread Monday when I start the old excercise program. How do I let myself get talked into these things? oh wait...this was my idea. Hm...I'm slipping.

They say the first thing you do in the New Year is what you will do for the rest of the year; I woke up and started writing!! Notice I said 'woke up'? I thought I'd stay up and blow some horns with my son, but alas, boomer that I am, I fell asleep at 9. (As usual) But I woke up at quarter after 12, grabbed a pen and started 'writing it down'! Happy New Year, ya'll!

Since New Year's Eve is my wedding anniversary and then the anniversary of when Nathan came to live with us we all stick together for New Year's.

We took the train from Baltimore to Union Station in DC, hung around most of the afternoon and came home about dinner time and shared pizza at our house with friends. Very relaxing.

No one made it to midnight.

Well Lynn, according to Unique's theory you will probably be sleeping through 2005! [Razz]

How fun to have your anniversary and Nathan's on the same day! Were you able to plan that?

We still celebrate our kids anniversaries by giving them a little gift. Our birth child gets ripped off. He only has a birthday to celebrate! [Eek!]

My husband and I watched a movie, then played Scrabble. We watched the ball drop on TV then had a glass of sparkling grape juice and toasted each other and the new year.

Re: How did everyone celebrate New Year's Eve? - 01/04/05 01:39 AM

My goodness, we were not able to plan our anniversaries together.

Nathan was born on November 27. We were notified about 2 weeks later and saw him on Dec 19th for the first time. In Maryland, birth parents can change their minds after they have revoked their parental rights, 30 days after signing the papers. Nathan's birthparents wanted to put a plan together so they asked that he not live with his adoptive family for the 30 days becasue they did not want to break up a home.

We gritted our teeth until Dec 31 when we could bring him home! [Big Grin] It was just meant to be.

Lynn, what a great story. I know a coupel who brought the child home during the 30 say period and the birth parents changed their mind. [Frown] It was very sad. They had to give the child back.
This was years ago. They have since adopted a son who is now 18 years old. I didn't know the law still existed.

Vicki, thanks for the Scrabble reminder. We need to get that out of the cupboard. We've gone through stages of playing that game while the kids were growing up. [Big Grin] Who won? You or your hubby?

I love scrabble. My husband refuses to play with me any more because I've gotten too good. Right now I'm playing in 6 online scrabble tournaments and 6 other games with friends. I can't join tournaments in my busy work seasons.

OH NOOO! Say it isn't so?! That what you brought your new year in doing is what it will be like for the rest of the year.

I took a trip to Mississippi with 'El Desparado' and was lost in some small town called Parigold when the clock struck midnight. (see Singlehood Forum for El Desparado details) NOOOOOO!

My daughter was very optimistic though. She says that means I'll spend the rest of the year seeing new things and visiting new places.

I was proud of her. She turned 18 in December. I was gone out of state. She and a few of her friends spent the new year at church praising God. Isn't that just lovely? I was so pleased when she told me about the good time she and her friends had there.

Happy New Year

Sugaree,
Don't worry. I don't think your New Year will be filled with 'suffering with the crazies'. [Wink] I think your daughter is right. It will be filled with travel to new places and meeting new people. Of course not all of them will be 'good'. [Eek!] Life isn't like that - - But - - God can always take bad and make it into good, so REJOICE! Have fun and don't forget to tell us about your adventures. Unique

I agree with Dotsie...sounds like your daughter has a good head on her shoulders. I bet her cup is always half full. I wouldn't worry about NY's superstitions. I didn't eat Black-eyed peas...so there you go! I already had wonderful things happen. You just keep trying Sug...you'll be fine!

We walked around my sister and brother in law's neighborhood and checked out the wonderful bakeries. Went to a French grocery store and bought things for dinner and returned to their place and cooked and celebrated a French New Years Eve including this pastry that has a charm hidden in it and if you get the charm, there is a crown you get to wear. I got to wear the crown! Shared it with all at the table too. Watched an American DVD and David and I were back in our hotel room by 10. So, does this mean I get to spend the rest of my life in Paris? Really wouldn't want to. God Bless America!

OMG! I just overheard my 21 year old talking about what he did on NY night. He had his first drinks. He said that a woman could have taken advantage of him and that he wouldn't have minded. Hmmmm. I guess that's what i get for listening to a grown man's conversation.

You're right JJ. My daughter's cup is always half full. She is certainly a blessing and such a pleasure.

I like your style Unique. I sure hope that I wont spend the rest of my year like so.

Dotsie, my goodness. This young lady of mine sure does amaze me. I really liked what you did. Strolling thru a historical setting sounds so, so, soooo, whats the word here? Romantic? So cultivated? So Unique?

Really, it sounds like the perfect evening with family, friends and a beautiful peaceful setting to bring the new in.

God Bless

We were going to spend an evening at home watching a basketball game after an early dinner. Then we found out we couldn't get the college basketball game on our dish network, so decided to go down to the local pool hall/bowling alley/ dance place to play pool and then decide what we wanted to do. We decided to stay for the party, had some fun with old friends, rode a mechanical bull and remember getting home that night. So all is good! I am determined to live my life and do the things I want to do, include working harder on my writing and making plans to retire.

OMIYES, Dots. Years ago Dave and I came to an understanding. I wasn't going anywhere and if he wanted to leave I'd help him pick out a clean pair of underwear.

We spent New Year's in the White Mountains. [Smile] I thought I already posted this, but I don't see it. We had a nice peaceful couple of days shopping at the outlets in North Conway, NH and poking around our favorite shops. Had a great dinner on New Year's Eve at the Bernerhof, where we stayed. Did a lot of reading, a little writing, met some nice people, saw some old friends. Missed Dick Clark. Wrote a poem about icicles. They were hanging from the roof of the inn just begging to be written about. [Roll Eyes]

Maybe I am just in one of those questioning moods today, so please forgive me if this is a dumb question. Why is "what did you do for New Year's" in the drugs/alcohol forum? Is is just presumed that people get drunk, high or whatever on New Years?

Re: How did everyone celebrate New Year's Eve? - 01/18/05 05:41 AM

MM, I'm the one who started the post. I had no idea what topic it was under. I probably just started it in response to some post on Alcohol & drugs that reminded me.

Drinking champagne at midnight might put it under alcohol and drugs, but I'm pretty sure I wasn't thinking that far ahead.

No clue. ??
