I don't think retirement is a viable option now a days, people are living longer and staying well and active and seem to be working to much older ages. Plus money is also a problem for some, prices of things keep going up, up, up.

Sometimes I think it isn't so much the day to day living expenses as it is the INSURANCE! One major surgery and a boomer could be wiped out, entirely!

Here's another point of view. I read an article today that was a speech delivered to an association in Texas (I won't say which one)by a marketing firm. I'm paraphasing here, but they were telling them that there's a new consumer in town and they say, "less is more." That more and more Americans are saying they don't want the second homes, the big cars, and all the material things they had been striving for before. That Americans are looking around and not liking what they see. They are becoming more conservative in their purchasing. The common thread in all these groups, he told these members, is a tendency away from the big dream and a tendency toward affordable and simple pleasures. And since 9-11, these are people who place a greater value than at any other time in the past two decades on the family meal.

According to this marketing firm, we're going BACK to our "raisin'" in a sense. I agree somewhat.

I totally agree JJ. Even with Medicare coverage you still need a secondary Insurance to cover what Medicare does not. Heaven forbid a major illness would occur. I think its still the money issue, no one can afford to retire in style now a days. One has to really watch their spending habits. Things keep going up and up and retirement stays the same for the most part. I hear it from the retiree's living around me in this resort. I know I have cut back in the last several years and am still working, for myself but still working.
