This might "spark" some interest starting tonight: lol

9pm ET PBS The Human Spark: Becoming Us Alan Alda explores what differentiates humans from other species in this three-part series, which begins in France's Dordogne region, where humans made spectacular cave paintings and carvings some 30,000 years ago. He compares those humans to Neanderthals, who had lived for hundreds of thousands of years yet had little art and no evolving technology to show for it. Alda ponders when and where the human spark first ignited---whether in the Dordogne caves or even earlier, on a different continent.

I've been watching a snippet of the shows - hope they have another run of them soon so that I can catch them in their entirety.

I have caught the recent ETV Special on Hummingbirds and other wildlife shows.

January 19, 2010 Human Spark:

9pm ET PBS The Human Spark: So Human, So Chimp Alan Alda investigates the similarities and differences between humans and their fellow simians, including chimpanzees. To that end, he observes and participates in studies that compare chimps with children, and learns that the uniqueness of humans is tied to the ability to reason.

Tuesday January 26, 2010 The Human Spark

9pm ET PBS The Human Spark: Brain Matters The finale examines host Alan Alda's brain via high-tech imaging techniques in an effort to map the location of the "human spark." The endeavor unveils those parts of the brain used for language and making-using tools, as well as imagination.

Fascinating series. Not only entertaining but educational as well. I really enjoy seeing Alan Alda react to what he learns. You can tell he's delighted!
