    Boomer Women's World Newsletter October 2006
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Dear Dotsie,
    NABBW has members from 40 states - plus Canada, New Zealand, and England!
    "The things we call impossible may be only one more step away from where we are right now. Don't stop trying too soon. " --- Joan Chittister, Becoming Fully Human: The Greatest Glory of God
    I had the tremendous pleasure of meeting Marianne Gray, editor for me* Magazine while I was in Winter Park, Florida. I was truly blown away by her tour of the Menopause the Musical, me*Magazine, and MTM Uncorked (Women Who Wine) headquarters. Jeanie Linders has created an empire for midlife women and it's all fabulous. I experienced creativity like never before as Marianne showed me through their facility and introduced me to all the remarkable women (and two men) who do what it takes to keep a show, magazine, and wine club thriving.
    I'm also happy to share that two NABBW associates have been asked to write for me* Magazine after their articles were read in this newsletter. I always take pleasure in learning how membership in the NABBW helps women personally and professionally.
    On a more personal note. I'd like to thank everyone for all the well wishes, cards, e-cards, emails, and flowers. My knee continues to heal, but at a very slow rate (in my opinion). Perhaps that's why I chose the quote at the beginning of this newsletter. I believe patience is one of the lessons I need to learn from this dark cloud. However, the silver lining has been watching and receiving all the kindness, goodness, and love in others. Now if I could just get this knee bent enough so I can drive and start doing my share for others!
    My prayer is that you use the information in this newsletter to feel connected, encouraged, supported, educated, and empowered at midlife. I know I do.
    Boomer Women's World is adding advertising opportunities to our newsletter. Please contact us if you are interested in seeing your ad in this newsletter. We have also added a Boomer Review section where we will continue to review books, products and services for the NABBW members. I hope you will grab a cold drink, sit back, and enjoy reading this issue that contains all topics of interest to baby boomer women.
    Onward with grace,
    Dotsie
    Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road
    Humorous Views on Love, Lust and Lawn Care
    By Diana Estill, Humorist, Columnist and Author
    Reviewed by Patti Hill, www.pattiswriting.com
    Diana has the gift of seeing the stresses and strife of everyday life through the lens of humor. 'Driving' is laugh-out-loud hilarious.
    By opening the doors to her own family fun, crisis, accidents and chaos we are taken on a road trip through life. Crazy antics, life experiences and lessons of life are laced with humor. Laughing at her stories makes us chuckle at our own similar ones and allows us to realize they weren't as bad as we thought them to be.
    'Driving' promises to bring cheer to any woman who has bemoaned the antics of her household, fortifying her with renewed strength to face the day, bringing her fresh vision with which to view the unglamorous moments of family life and reassuring her that all families are just a tiny bit crazy.
    Give Wings to Your Dreams
    By Lauren E. Sullivan
    Review by Georgia Richardson,Queen Jaw Jaw
    I want to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Going one step further, I'll add that I really don't believe it matters what stage of life you're experiencing, you'll find something within the pages of this book that resonates within.
    Ms Sullivan's book is warm, inviting, and almost like having your own personal life coach sitting across from you helping you to make sense of the chaos and showing you how to take charge of your broken dreams, encouraging you all the way. I felt a kinship with her once I finished the book.
    The fluff and hype is absent, thank goodness, and instead you're presented with REAL help to transform your life in the form of the 'Seven Stepping Stones.' Chapter by chapter, each step is clear, concise, and gentle. These steps will teach you to look within to start your own personal journey, and to stay focused on the positive; the hope. As Lauren puts it, 'The journey starts with taking personal responsibility for the quality of your life, and making the choice to step into your power as a woman.' This one sentence alone was worth the read! Thank you Ms Sullivan! This book is powerful, bold, and coming from a woman in the throws of mid-life, to me it was magical. Don't miss it. I highly recommend Give Wings to Your Dreams.
    WHATEVER!
    By Beverly Malone
    www.talk2bev.com
    Reviewed by Georgia Richardson, Queen Jaw Jaw
    Ms. Malone's takes the reader on a midlife journey in her debut novel, WHATEVER! Her book could be considered bold and vivid as she accurately and openly gives the reader her discoveries into the mind and emotions of an aging baby boomer; herself!
    Beverly demonstrates throughout the book that even though the journey into middle age may include boundaries and limitations, some imaginary, some real, there is still a powerful, creative side that boomer women today posses, and many are happily discovering their new "self" along the way. Middle age doesn't mean you leave the humor behind, either. For instance, in her own words she says, "I'm still hot ... It just comes in flashes now!"
    PERSUADING YOUR PARENTS: A 2-STEP PROCESS TO SUCCESS
    By Barbara E. Friesner
    Recently, while standing in a crowded, noisy hallway, someone asked me THE question: 'How can I persuade my aging loved one(s) to willingly do something they don't want to do, even though it's in their best interest?' As I began to answer, the whole area fell silent and everyone leaned in to hear my answer. I thought I'd been transported into that old financial advice commercial!
    Unfortunately, the answer is you can't! Sorry, but unless your aging loved one(s) has dementia, they are free to do what they want.
    But fear not! There is a way to help them want to do what's in their best interest. It's a process called 'The 2-Step Process To Agreement' and it's the basis for the 100% success rate of Generational Coaching.
    Menopause and Leg Cramps
    By Cathy Taylor
    Menopause occurs when the levels of estrogen and progesterone become less and menstruation stops completely for over a year. Among the common symptoms of menopause are irregular periods and hot flashes, mood swings, irritability, sleep disturbances, vaginal dryness and urinary tract problems. Menopausal women may also suffer stomach pains and leg cramps and some may suffer more, as compared to others, in terms of sleeplessness.
    Menopause and Leg Cramps
    Leg cramp pain during menopause can come on suddenly. It can be a shooting, sharp pain that can disturb your sleep, or wake you up. This pain may linger and make the area sore for almost 24 hours.
    The Power of No
    By Prill Boyle
    As a writer who works from home, setting boundaries is an issue I deal with on a daily basis. I've just returned from a month in the Thousand Islands where I've been writing a novel, and what I want most right now is to finish my book. (Every day I don't write, my heart shrivels; every day I do, it soars.) But since I've been back, I can't seem to find the time.
    CHANGING RULES
    By Nan S. Russell
    Poor Pluto. Stripped of its planetary status by the International Astronomical Union and reclassified as a "dwarf planet," Pluto's demotion heralds new rules for planet classification. A week of debate by renowned astronomers from seventy-five countries culminated in the decision to reduce the number of planets to eight "classic" ones.
    This reclassification got me thinking. Like a company reorganization or leadership change, the rules were altered. And no matter if you were among scientists advocating for more planets or less, it no longer matters. The decision is rendered. Like it. Don't like it. It's done. Organizational changes can be like that too.
    By Julie Clark Robinson
    'Be still in silence and listen to your heart. When it speaks to you, arise and go where it brings you.'
    --Susan Tamaro, Va' Dove Ti Porta il Cuore
    I think the sound of my own voice has finally gotten to me. Here it is, four years after I sat down to write my book, (ambitiously entitled Live in the Moment), two years after it was published, and countless book signings, speeches and interviews later, I'm finally going to take my own advice. I'm off to Italiana!
    Can I afford it? Nope. Will my husband and kids be able to stay alive for ten whole days without me? Hope so. Is this something I've wanted to do for as long as I can remember? You bet it is.
    CinderPillow
    By Georgia Richardson
    Ask any psychiatrist worth their weight in Prozac and they'll tell you that children can be traumatized at an early age by a parent's lack of understanding and their insensitivity. Take Halloween night, for instance. Its one night for Pete's sake. It comes ONCE a year and you don't get to celebrate it again until the following year . . . same time, once a year. Are we clear on this?
    So, one would think that one's parents would have understood a little girl's fantasy of being Cinderella for that ONE night. Ahem . . . NOT.
    The Success Prison: Are You Incarcerated?
    By Judith Sherven, Ph.D. & James Sniechowski, Ph.D.
    If you feel frustrated, even mystified by what's standing in the way of your greater success, it's actually not that difficult to understand.
    The question is: Are you ready? Really ready?
    Because the answer lives down in your unconscious . . . laying there . . . lying to you.
    And that's not just clever writing, that's the truth about your inner saboteur' that lying, scheming, sneaky inner voice that whispers at you creating doubt and despair, or sometimes lays silent, waiting for it's next chance to undermine your desire and ambition.
    Mentoring
    By Karen Baar
    If you're anything like me, your get-togethers with friends have begun to include more complaining about aging. 'Oh, I'm so stiff when I wake up in the morning,' says one. 'Oy, I grunt every time I get out of the car,' says another. And: 'I can't stand looking at all my wrinkles,' says a third.
    It's only natural. No one likes the idea of getting older. But when the conversation veers from legitimate issues to whining, I remember Sarah.
    Building Better Boomer Bodies
    By Mary Pearsall
    Times have really changed. Could you imagine our mothers picking up a dumbbell or doing a set of pushups? It just didn't happen back then. A lot of baby boomer women are supplementing their exercise programs with some kind of muscle conditioning ' and for good reason. Time and again research has shown that women who maintain a regular moderate strength training program enjoy many and varied health benefits. However many women fear that lifting weights will bulk them up like Arnold, so they avoid this aspect of fitness.
    The truth is, strength training is one of the most effective anti-aging strategies we can employ. Got your attention? Read on to find out why women, especially boomers, need to get serious about building healthy strong bodies.
    ANXIETY, PANIC DISORDER, AND PHOBIAS ' THE SCARY AND THE SCARED
    By Karen Stephen, Ph.D.
    ANXIETY
    No one alive has escaped the feeling of anxiety. It may consist of that isolated worry but most women admit to at least one or two periods in their lives when their anxiety was overwhelming.
    Is anxiety something we should avoid or get rid of? Not at all. An anxiety response is a perfectly normal response that we experience when we face the unknown, the difficult, or the unpleasant. I always remind the women in my midlife support group that if they are not experiencing ANY anxiety, they are probably not making any changes in their lives or trying anything new. They are maintaining a safe status quo.
    When is anxiety the worst?
    A Theaterlover's London
    By Carol Sorgen
    If you love theater, two destinations come to mind'New York, of course, and also London. If you're planning a trip to London, like I recently did, indulge your 'culture vulture' side and enjoy the London stage, but from a different vantage point'behind the scenes.
    To set the stage'so to speak'for your theaterloving experience, choose a hotel that's in the very center of the West End, London's theater district equivalent to Broadway. For me, that meant the Savoy. This historic hotel first opened its doors in 1889, the vision of Gilbert & Sullivan impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte. The hotel was built next to the Savoy Theatre, and is only a few steps from Covent Garden and many London theaters including The Royal Opera House, Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, the Novello, and the Coliseum, home of the English National Opera.
    How Much Money Do You Need to Retire?
    By Jan Cullinane
    How do you make your money last as long as you do? Ah, if it were only as easy as throwing out a number ' actually, about $10 million would probably do nicely. But, since most of us won't be in the position to have that kind of nest egg, how do you determine how much you'll need in retirement? Let's discuss some general rules and some important, often overlooked factors. There are some scary statistics out there. About a third of adults have said they haven't saved anything for retirement, and almost half of retirees rely on Social Security as their chief source of income.
